Mini Makeover: 10 Easy Ways to Perk Up Your Bathroom

Renovating a bathroom can be one of the most expensive home projects you might embark on. But there are plenty of inexpensive and labor un-intensive ways to give your bathroom a zshush and make it new to you. Here are 10 of the easiest ones.

1) Swap out your shower curtain. While you’re at it, give that liner a wash or demote it to paint tarp and get a new one.

2) Throw down a new bath mat. You can opt for one that’s made to be a bath mat, or chose a small area rug like a flat-weave or Oriental carpet.

3) Mount some better storage. One thing that bums me out are shampoo bottles, cosmetics and other toiletries that don’t have a proper place to be put away. Adding a new shelf or cabinet can help you keep this potential clutter organized and handy.

4) Upgrade your accessories. “Toilet brush” and “sexy” are not usually words you hear in the same sentence. But there are plenty of well-designed utilitarian bathroom accessories like wastebaskets, toilet paper roll holders, soap dispensers and more on the market today.

5) Hang a new mirror. Something as simple as a new shape or frame color can switch up the look of your bathroom. You can even do some mirror swaps from around the house; perhaps the one over your dresser is ready for a new spot, and vice-versa.

6) Stick it to the window. Add texture and privacy to your bathroom window with adhesive film, like this one from Emma Jeffs.

7) Toss your dirties into something fresh. Adding a hamper with a fun pattern, texture or color (or all three) might even make you want to do laundry.

8) Make sure everything has space to hang. Lately I’ve found I don’t have enough room for the luxury of multiple towel bars. Hooks are a space-saving option.

9) House that soap in something different. Don’t limit yourself to what the shops declare is a proper soap dish. Raid your kitchen pantry or display shelves for a saucer, small plate or other china that will fit a bar.

10) Don’t shy away from a little bling. Why not add some glamour to your bathroom? You and your toothbrush deserve it.

Some Easy Swaps and Props for Summer Decor

If you’re not going anywhere this weekend, it’s a great time to summer-fy your place. Or for those of you lucky enough to have a cottage or a summer share it’s the prime weekend to open it up and give it a zshush. Here are 10 favorite products that will help you get ready for summer.

1. Lobstahs! Go for that overt sea creature theme, because now is the time. A favorite lobster accessory of mine is the Thomas Paul Lobster Sketch Pillow.

2. Candlelight.  Get ready for some outdoor candlelight. The usual tealight holders won’t keep the breeze from blowing out your flames. Add color and cute little perforated designs to your moody candlelight with notNeutral Hurricanes (set of 2).

3. Be picnic-ready. The Fatboy Picnic Lounge has plenty of room for your entire picnic party and comes with four pins to keep it grounded and a brush to keep it sand-free.

4. Embrace the BBQ, and take it wherever you go. The RS Barcelona Mon Oncle BBQ is portable, has retro style and you tote it down to the beach  in a cool little briefcase. This makes it a cool little accessory when it’s stashed in the house, not in use. you won’t want to hide it in a garage like those other grills.

5. Add some summery art. I love to switch up my color scheme in the summer. One key work of art can inspire all of your choices. The pastels and bright greens in this oil painting by Ginger Marshall will make the room feel instantly airier.

6. Accessorize your mojito. Hot days call for cool cocktails. Jazz them up with these playful patterns from See Design.

7. Have the lemonade or sweet tea chillin’. Also, you must have a pitcher of iced tea at the ready at all times. Them’s the rules. The ittala Aino Aalto Pitcher is a mid-century classic, and seeing it every time you open up the refrigerator will make you happy.

9. Swap in cotton for wool. Lighter brighter rugs will remind your bare feet it’s summer. This is the Blu Dot Bravo Rug in Orange.

10. Hang a summery shower curtain. This is the easiest and least expensive way to give your bathroom what will feel like a total makeover. Thomas Paul has everything from the squid to the whale on his sea-inspired shower curtains, but I find this pair of seahorses too cute to resist.

A Quick Way to Spruce Up Your Bathroom

Posted by Becky | View all posts by Becky

Santa brought me a creature from the deep blue sea this year, and yesterday I gave my bathroom a great makeover in about 20 minutes (hanging a shower curtain is a real pain; I highly recommend dragging out the stepladder for this task or your arms will feel like they are going to fall off by the time you are done!).

Whoopsie, looks like I need to paint the side of the door black (see right side of photo above). Isn’t it funny how you don’t notice these things in person but they show up in a photo? Looks like I could have moved the toilet brush and the bathroom scale to style this a little better. Oh well, at least I remembered to put the toilet seat down!

Santa also brought me some tea towels, which I’ve decided to use as bathroom hand towels. My bathroom doesn’t have a towel bar, and I’m not crazy about them, so I used over-the-door hooks instead.

I’m not too big on too much matchy-matchy, so I’ll probably move the lacquer box to another room, but I thought I’d try out being matchy-matchy for a few weeks and see if it sticks! This box is great for stashing all of my everyday makeup in one place.
