5 Must-Have Elements for The Perfect Outdoor Space

For many of us, the pollen is finally clearing, and it’s time to get that outdoor space spiffed up so that we can spend the maximum amount of time outdoors. What makes a great outdoor space? Here are my personal top five:

Even the tiniest of spaces needs plants to enliven it. Surely there is room even on the smallest of balconies for at least a potted plant or two. Consider a trellis, hanging pots or boxes that hang over the railings if you’re short on floor space.

Modernica’s mid-century modern pots with stands are one of the chicest modern ways to add life to your outdoor space.

Sometimes, the moon is not enough (or it’s a sliver). Enhance your lighting scheme however you can — tiki torches, lanterns, even inexpensive outdoor holiday lights can be just the right way to set the mood.

I’m also crazy about these pots from Offi, because they double as mood lighting. A compact fluorescent bulb is all it takes for them to light up your outdoor space with magical ambiance. Shop more outdoor lighting options —we’ve got everything from perforated candleholders to outdoor lamps with indoor style.

Yes, lots of people have fancy fire pits and full chimneys start at about tens thousand dollars. But it is easy to bring in a small fire pit that will keep you more than toasty on a cool night and toast a smorgasbord of s’mores to perfection.

Loll’s Fire Ring Set comes with an array of different colored tops so that it can serve double-duty as a coffee table when it’s not smoldering. But I like charcoal gray because it’s modern and it goes well with fire.

You cannot very well host that al fresco dinner party you’ve been thinking about without a proper table and chairs. Whether you buy new or set up some sawhorses, an old door for a tabletop and a mix of chairs from indoors, start envisioning your outdoor tablescape.

While I’d like to think it’s my scintillating personality that keeps my friends coming back to my screened-in porch for wine night, I know it’s really the cushy sofa where everyone can get comfy on big pillows and put their feet up.

The Blu Dot Jibe Collection is my favorite new outdoor line. It has all the comfort of indoor furniture without getting overwhelmed by overstuffed cushions.

What are your personal top five outdoor elements? Can’t live without the bubble of a fountain or the tunes from Pandora? Let us know in the comments section.

An indigo pen gone wild; I’d love to add these powerful graphic pieces to a warm Danish modern dining table with a few Dansk accessories and simple minimalist white china — ferm LIVING Pen Napkins (they come in sets of four)

Of course, on my minimalist warm modern table, I’d also allow for this wonderful black and white vase. I’m thinking spears of purple irises or floppy yellow tulips would finish it off — The Kahler Omaggio Vase

Blu Dot Sale! Save 20% Through November 9th

It’s that time of year — Blu Dot is 20% off now through November 9, 2014! If you’re not familiar with Blu Dot, chances are you’ve seen their work around and just didn’t know it. Two best friends, John Christakos and Maurice Blanks founded the Minnesota company in 1997 and it has taken the design world by storm ever since. Founded on the simple concept that Good Design Is Good, creating pieces that are practical and just plain cool.

If you haven’t checked them out, Blu Dot is one of the best companies to follow on Pinterest, as they apply their discerning eyes to all good design and share their creative collaborations. They also ran a two-week swap meet, where folks could propose trades for their products. Successful fans proposed trading Blu Dot products rendered in cross-stitch, carrying a Rook Table Lamp around Boston for a week and even learning a ukelele song to in turn, dedicate to them.

Plus, their product shots always inspire and awe. This one for their Nook Bed is one of our all-time faves:

Their Strut Tables remain one of the most popular items, whether in coffee table form as seen here, dining room table size or console table:

Here is the Rook Lamp one fan was willing to take everywhere with her for a week. Sounds worth it, but personally, I’d rather just save 20%:

No deer were harmed while photographing this shot, which includes a Strut Dining Table,  a 4-Drawer Shale Credenza, a Delta Rug and a couple of Real Good Chairs in Copper:

The best thing about the philosophy that Good Design Is Good is that these pieces are timeless. They aren’t something yo’ll chuck during a move, but rather, something you’ll hang on to and treasure for decades. Blu Dots pieces slip into not only contemporary and modern rooms; they work with traditional, transitional, collected and rustic rooms too.

You have a few weeks to ponder which pieces you’d like to invest in, but do it while you have a chance to save big.
