Five Ways to Add Rustic Modern Style

The fact that the nights are cold and dark can make a crisp white contemporary room feel chilly and stark. Taking notes from cozy cabins, add a few rustic textures like walnut, cozy plaid textiles, leather and brass to warm it right up. While rustic cabin style may seem at odds with modern/contemporary rooms, these items combine cozy textures with clean lines and clever design. Here are five favorite rustic modern pieces.

Lights Up! Woody Pendant Lamp. This beautiful pendant adds the textures of a thin wood veneer’s grain and linen, clean modern lines and a warm glow overhead overhead.

Gus Modern Hex Ottoman. The large-scale colorful plaid will add a cozy cabin touch to your modern room. It’s easy to pull around by the handle when you need to move it for extra seating or a place to put your feet up.

Skargaarden Marstrand Candle Lantern. Beautiful caramel-colored leather trimmed out with tacks add rich rustic texture to this simple glass hurricane. Use them on a tablescape or hanging indoors or out.

Twig Terrarium Gentle Reminder Male. For those who take a close look through the glass at the clever terrariums by Twig, there’s always a fun surprise. In this case, it’s a man holding an I Heart You sign among the stones and moss. A wooden sphere tops it off perfectly.

Gus Modern Wireframe Coffee Table. The mix of deep rich walnut wood and black, powder-coated steel grid framework is a wonderful balance of rustic and modern.

On Trend: Brass Is Back

I know, I know. The word “brass” gives you flashbacks to all that very lacquered, fake looking, gaudy ’80s stuff. But that image of brass is all wrong. Let’s set the record straight.

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 1.58.14 PMToday’s brass has earned that oh-so-popular design word, “patina.” It’s unlacquered and thus a living finish, which means it changes over time and gets even better with age. It can go glam, traditional, modern, new bohemian … it’s really just about what you pair this warm finish with. Here are some of our favorite fresh ways to welcome brass back into our homes. 1940539_Duane_Pendant_Black_SrenRose_01.jpg

Menu Duane Pendant. An assemblage inspired by repurposed lamp parts, this powder-coated steel light is a black hemisphere on the outside, and illuminates the bulb by surrounding it with a warm glow inside.

Chilewich Rectangular Drift Placemat. Inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints, this woven mat adds a base that will bring metallic movement to your tablescape. 4116_1.jpg

Ferm Living Brass Tray. Impress your guests. This is an easy way to corral your booze and glassware in a chic arrangement.

Menu Franklin Chandelier. This solid brass piece is a tribute to old-school Manhattan hardware stores.

Menu Pepe Marble Mirror. Inspired by the glamorous style of Italy in the 1950s, this mirror is at once modern and an elegant throwback, crafted with a brass frame and marble base.

ferm LIVING Hexagon Brass Pots. We’r all for mixing metals, but if you’ve switched out your fixtures and hardware for brass you may just want to coordinate. ferm LIVING has all kinds of accessories including a brass toilet paper holder and a brass paper towel holder.  The small vase seen here would do a great job as a toothbrush holder.

It’s look is timeless, and it’s also available in the E60 version which has lacquer and linoleum colored top options.

We’re kicking off a killer sale on Cerno. From now through March 1, 2015, Cerno Lighting is 15% off. Cerno’s selection includes table lamps, floor lamps, pendant lights and sconces. Cerno’s products are made of sustainably forested wood, and they are made in California.  The fact that they are LED makes them energy efficient. In other words, it’s a feel good purchase, which cancels out any guilt about treating yourself, OK?

It’s hard to pick a favorite, but here’s a preview. Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 7.39.16 PM

Cerno Valeo Floor LampThis functional work of art makes a massive statement about scale, and approaches things from its own angles. Technically a floor lamp, it’s more of a drum shade on the world’s coolest stand. The walnut wood adds warm to any contemporary space.

Cerno Cubo Bedside Sconce. This clever piece takes up no wall space and functions as a hybrid. Above, see the way it can swing into task mode. Below, the arm tucks away and behind a polymer shade, creating the mood for something more exciting than reading.

Cerno Muto Large Pendant. Overlapping planes of walnut bounce the light around, cast interesting shadows while the whole piece has modern lines reminiscent of simple and beautiful Japanese architecture.

Cerno Claudo Pendant Lamp. Fast becoming a modern classic, this piece plays with positive and negative space. The Claudo also comes in a wall sconce version.

The Cerno Silva Giant Floor Lamp. This floor lamp has a dramatic base that appears to defy gravity.

Great Deals on Some of Our Most Popular Lighting

There are a ton of fantastic sales going on at Design Public right now. As we get ready for that dreaded “fall back” day when we’ll be in darkness an hour earlier, it’s time to cheer up the house with the right lighting. We’ve slashed prices on some of our new classic, most popular pieces from modern pendants to funky table lamps, so I thought I’d introduce a few of them to you.

David Trubridge Kina Pendant Lamp

Right now, all David Trubridge is 15% off (through October 31, 2013). This is the David Trubridge Kina Pendant Lamp. I’ve noticed architects and interior designers scooping up this beautiful natural bamboo pendant. The shape was inspired by the structure of sea urchins.

Kartell Bourgie Lamp

Now through October 27, 2013, Kartell is 20% off, including the ever-popular Bourgie Lamp. Now that warm metals are back in style, you may want the bling of gold, but you can also choose chrome-plated, white or black matte. This silhouette is something a modern-day Marie Antoinette would appreciate, like if Sofia Coppola remade her movie again, in present day.

Kartell FL/Y Suspension Lamp

Kartell also makes the FL/Y Suspension Lamp, which comes in a rainbow of bright colors and has become a design staple. The pendant light adds a classic modern shape, bubbly personality and a punch of bold color.

Pablo Tube Top Colored Table Lamp

Now through October 24, 2013, all Pablo is 15% off. Pablo is one of the very first brands we ever carried and it’s been such a joy to see the company take off and see the designs placed in so many gorgeous design magazine spreads. The Pablo Tube Top Table Lamp is one of the mot popular table lamps I’ve noticed in modern and contemporary rooms; it also adds an eclectic touch to more traditional and collected room styles. The photo above just makes me happy, like a roll of LifeSavers.

The Pablo Link Task Lamp

The Pablo Link Task Lamp has a personality that makes me want to give each one it’s own name, each a funky character and will illuminate your desk or your bedtime reading with adjustable style.

So that’s just a teaser of just a few of the great lighting (in addition to many other pieces of furniture and accessories) deals we have going on. October is a great time to adjust your lighting and cozy up for winter, and there won’t be a better time than now to save big. What are you waiting for?
