So I was pretty sure Halloween was yesterday or the day before (mostly because I still have candy left over, which is some sort of Halloween miracle), but then I went into CVS and saw a bunch of Santas and candy canes. Yes, the early start of holiday marketing is ridiculous, and I wonder how many years it will be before we start hearing Christmas music in August, but at the same time, things are about to get hectic. We’ll be planning out Thanksgiving meals, putting on that show, getting the house ready for guests, decorating, cooking and before we know it, we’ll be rushing out the night before to get gifts. Hanukkah is only 5 weeks away.
So that’s my little disclaimer on why we’re starting to talk holiday gifts already. Click, order, receive it, stash it, and you won’t have to do the night-before-rush. While you’re at it, create a gift registry for yourself. Here are five of my favorite things Design Public has for under $50.
Kontextüre VIKTOR Toothbrush/Razor Holders in 18K Gold. Why? Because his is something that unless you giftee is Donald Trump, it’s something that they’d love but never buy for themselves. That’s what makes it such a treat, and that’s what gifts are all about.
Modern-twist Mark-Mat (with 4 markers). Why? Because it doesn’t matter how old you are, coloring your placemat while you wait for food is awesome. And when you’re hungry it’s hard to think of what to doodle, so having stuff to just mindlessly color in is good. You can wipe ‘em right down and do it all over again tomorrow. And yeah, these are also great for people who have actual children.
Boskke Cube — Triple. Why? Because you don’t find a fresh basil plant all moldy in a plastic bag in the bottom of a refrigerator drawer. It’s cool to be able to pick an herb right off your windowsill and throw it in your caprese. Plus, this has this awesome reserve watering system called Slo-Flo that means you can forget completely about watering it for almost a month and the plants will live. Check it out:
David Weeks Guthrie Cubebot. Why? Because Cubebot is awesome, and when you’re giftee is feeling stumped at his or her desk, playing with Cubebot is a nice way to de-stress and get unblocked. Plus he’s a great conversation starter. Clients will bond over Cubebot, coworkers and bosses will forget why they were mad when they walked in because Cubebot will distract them. Oh, and again, kiddos like Cubebot too.
Lotta Jansdotter Large Tray Set (of 2). Why? Because not only are these pretty (without being all girly), they are super handy, whether serving guests, schlepping dinner to the TV room, to use as a hard surface on a soft ottoman for drinks or corral accessories in a bathroom or guest room. They’ll also accessorize a room with a splash of graphic design.
