Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Have you figured out what you’re doing for Mom this year? Here are just a few of our favorites for a wide range of busy modern Moms.

Mom deserves  fashionable tote. Whether she’s out running errands or needs a sturdy bag to tote her laptop to work, the Flowie Lily Tote with black pecan trees and a leather bottom will chic up her outfit.

Planting with Mom is a fun way to spend some time together, and she’ll love having plants like basil, lavender, rosemary or whatever she chooses at her fingertips, artfully held by this modern rectangle planter, the Boskke Cube Triple.

Sometimes Mom just wants to cozy up and relax. Give her some “me time” for herself today with this gorgeous throw from Area, the Theo Blanket in Multi.

I don’t know about your Mom, but mine always had a phone that looked a lot like this wedged between her ear and her shoulder. While the Native Union Pop Bluetooth Phone  doesn’t have the curly phone wire, it will make modern technology feel more familiar.

If your Mom loves to spend time cooking in the kitchen, help her keep her clothes splatter free in a fashionable way with this Triangle Apron from Ferm Living.

Moms love some bling. We love the simple and modern look of this smaller circle within a larger one; you can infer your own symbolism but we think it’s perfect for Mother’s Day. The Inner Circle Necklace by Vanessa Gade Jewelry is made of hand-fabricated sterling silver with a 14K gold overlay.

A Jump Start on Holiday Gifts — 5 Stylish Gifts Under $50

Becky

So I was pretty sure Halloween was yesterday or the day before (mostly because I still have candy left over, which is some sort of Halloween miracle), but then I went into CVS and saw a bunch of Santas and candy canes. Yes, the early start of holiday marketing is ridiculous, and I wonder how many years it will be before we start hearing Christmas music in August, but at the same time, things are about to get hectic. We’ll be planning out Thanksgiving meals, putting on that show, getting the house ready for guests, decorating, cooking and before we know it, we’ll be rushing out the night before to get gifts. Hanukkah is only 5 weeks away.

So that’s my little disclaimer on why we’re starting to talk holiday gifts already. Click, order, receive it, stash it, and you won’t have to do the night-before-rush. While you’re at it, create a gift registry for yourself.  Here are five of my favorite things Design Public has for under $50.

Kontextüre VIKTOR Toothbrush/Razor Holders in 18K Gold. Why? Because his is something that unless you giftee is Donald Trump, it’s something that they’d love but never buy for themselves. That’s what makes it such a treat, and that’s what gifts are all about.

Modern-twist Mark-Mat (with 4 markers). Why? Because it doesn’t matter how old you are, coloring your placemat while you wait for food is awesome. And when you’re hungry it’s hard to think of what to doodle, so having stuff to just mindlessly color in is good. You can wipe ‘em right down and do it all over again tomorrow. And yeah, these are also great for people who have actual children.

Boskke Cube — Triple. Why? Because you don’t find a fresh basil plant all moldy in a plastic bag in the bottom of a refrigerator drawer. It’s cool to be able to pick an herb right off your windowsill and throw it in your caprese. Plus, this has this awesome reserve watering system called Slo-Flo that means you can forget completely about watering it for almost a month and the plants will live. Check it out:

David Weeks Guthrie Cubebot. Why? Because Cubebot is awesome, and when you’re giftee is feeling stumped at his or her desk, playing with Cubebot is a nice way to de-stress and get unblocked. Plus he’s a great conversation starter. Clients will bond over Cubebot, coworkers and bosses will forget why they were mad when they walked in because Cubebot will distract them. Oh, and again, kiddos like Cubebot too.

Lotta Jansdotter Large Tray Set (of 2). Why? Because not only are these pretty (without being all girly), they are super handy, whether serving guests, schlepping dinner to the TV room, to use as a hard surface on a soft ottoman for drinks or corral accessories in a bathroom or guest room. They’ll also accessorize a room with a splash of graphic design.

Design Public hopped over to the other coast this week to check out the gift show in New York City. This is an exhilarating and exhausting trip, where we get to talk to our vendors and meet new ones.

I’ll never forget my first gift show. I was completely overstimulated and fascinated, and my feet had never throbbed so much. There were creatives from all over the world, presenting everything they had worked so hard on all year.

I couldn’t make it this year, but Todd Thedinga did. Here are just a few fun shots he’s snapped at the show as he booth-hops. We’re excited to be bringing all of the new products to you as soon as they are available. In the meantime, here’s a peek, and some links to shop all of  their current goodies.

The consummate cook: iittala Tools Cookware. This is for a cook/chef whom you really love a lot. Quality meant for professional chefs and style geared toward design aesthetes make these pieces the ones they’ll proudly leave out on the stovetop or pot rack even when they are not in use.

The bird lover: iittala Toikka Birds. Each glass-blown bird is a one-of-a-kind work of art by Oiva Toikka, and is something your giftee will treasure for life.

The MoMA member: An Aalto Vase. No modernists home is complete without an iconic Alvar Aalto vase. The smallest version starts at $54.40 with this sale, a total steal.

The oenophile: Essence Drinkware. These glasses are crafted from lead-free crystal and were designed to serve a full range of wines.

The modern host with the most: Vitriini Tray in Oak. Of course this is also a great gift for the hostess with the mostess. It’s a lovely tray for serving or corraling dressertop, nightstand or desk items or iittala glass boxes.

For me: Sarjaton Metsa Bowl. This little bowl is at the top of my list. No, I don’t expect you to send me one, but what the heck, I thought I’d throw my personal favorite in there. While it’s really meant for food and is dishwasher and microwave safe, my plans are to leave this Finnish porcelain beauty out on a shelf, on top of a stack of related books, like Finnish Summer Houses. Holy moly, I just looked up that book so I could shoot you guys a link and saw that sellers are reselling it for over $200! I may sell my copy so I can scoop up this bowl and a Toikka bird …
