5 Ways to Keep the “Fall Back” Blues Away

While I love the extra hour of sleep in the morning after the fall time change, I really struggle with how early it gets dark out. It’s too dark to get outside for exercise after work and I start to feel like I need one of those little anti-depressive head lamps to keep my mood up. But there are plenty of ways to deal with the early sunsets that don’t involve cumbersome headgear. Use those hours around dinnertime to lighten up your home and perk yourselves up. 08342_lighthink_box_03

1) Lighten things up. Literally. When the natural light tucks itself away for the night, it’s up to you to create layers of light to create a mood. Having one overhead light and nothing else is depressing. Bring out the floor lamps, table lamps, heck, maybe even install some sconces or pendants. Don’t forget spots you may not have thought of, like a small lamp on a shelf or mantel. I like these Lighthink Boxes from Seletti because they have happy messages. 2) Bring the life indoors. If you go through gardening withdrawal after that last harvest, do a little bit of indoor gardening. Whether it’s succulents, a large fiddlehead fig, herbs or even those low-maintenance air plants, get some life going on indoors.

3) Swap stuff around. I do this twice a year. If your surroundings are feeling stale, you’ll feel blah. It’s easy to switch things up. Trade some lamps, rugs, side tables/nightstands, objects and artwork around from room to room. Get a few new pillow covers. Put a cheery tablecloth on the table. Create a cool new centerpiece.

4) Just go with it. Use the time inside as an excuse for a little hibernation with those books you haven’t opened up in awhile. Put your PJs or not-so-activewear on, grab a coffee, tea or cocoa and pull down different books for the coffee table on a regular schedule so that you can enjoy them and get re-inspired by them. Go to bed early and get up early to make the most of the earlier sunrise.

5) Crank some tunes. Get your music set up so it’s accessible and easy to get going. Enjoy those songs you forgot you had by putting on random mode or running though your entire music library in alphabetical order, explore some new genres on Pandora, or go old-school and check out this thing you have called local FM radio.
