5 Must-Have Elements for The Perfect Outdoor Space

Becky

For many of us, the pollen is finally clearing, and it’s time to get that outdoor space spiffed up so that we can spend the maximum amount of time outdoors. What makes a great outdoor space? Here are my personal top five:

1. LIFE

Even the tiniest of spaces needs plants to enliven it. Surely there is room even on the smallest of balconies for at least a potted plant or two. Consider a trellis, hanging pots or boxes that hang over the railings if you’re short on floor space.

Modernica’s mid-century modern pots with stands are one of the chicest modern ways to add life to your outdoor space.

2. LIGHT

Sometimes, the moon is not enough (or it’s a sliver). Enhance your lighting scheme however you can — tiki torches, lanterns, even inexpensive outdoor holiday lights can be just the right way to set the mood.

I’m also crazy about these pots from Offi, because they double as mood lighting. A compact fluorescent bulb is all it takes for them to light up your outdoor space with magical ambiance. Shop more outdoor lighting options —we’ve got everything from perforated candleholders to outdoor lamps with indoor style.

3. FIRE

Yes, lots of people have fancy fire pits and full chimneys start at about tens thousand dollars. But it is easy to bring in a small fire pit that will keep you more than toasty on a cool night and toast a smorgasbord of s’mores to perfection.

Loll’s Fire Ring Set comes with an array of different colored tops so that it can serve double-duty as a coffee table when it’s not smoldering. But I like charcoal gray because it’s modern and it goes well with fire.

4. DINING FURNITURE

You cannot very well host that al fresco dinner party you’ve been thinking about without a proper table and chairs. Whether you buy new or set up some sawhorses, an old door for a tabletop and a mix of chairs from indoors, start envisioning your outdoor tablescape.

5. LOUNGING FURNITURE

While I’d like to think it’s my scintillating personality that keeps my friends coming back to my screened-in porch for wine night, I know it’s really the cushy sofa where everyone can get comfy on big pillows and put their feet up.

The Blu Dot Jibe Collection is my favorite new outdoor line. It has all the comfort of indoor furniture without getting overwhelmed by overstuffed cushions.

The great thing about September is that it will give us some of the nicest days of the year and is also a good month for scooping up outdoor furniture at a discount. Through September 30, 2014, save 15% on Loll Designs.

Loll Designs is a company that celebrates mid-century modern classics as well as contemporary style, adding twists like an unexpected line, bold bright colors and always a big old dollop of playfulness.

Get the fire cracking with Loll’s Fire Ring Set.

One of the best things about Loll Designs’ furniture is that while it’s durable enough to stand up to the elements, the pieces look great indoors as well. The Racer Rocker will put you at just the right height for toasting your marshmallows, and with it’s vibrant color options and low height is a great pick for a child’s playroom too.

Perhaps your pooch is craving some style at dinner time — she’ll love being served from a sturdy 1 Quart Pet Bowl.

Add some classic mid-century modern style with the timeless High Back Rocker by Ralph Rapson.

Put your feet up on the Bolinas Cocktail Table — it’s shape harkens back to the Atomic Age, and it also lends casual surfer-chic style.

Loll’s even got a killer Longboard, created in partnership with Grow Anthology.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Loll makes benches, planters, toolboxes, dining tables and chairs, birdhouses … even a bike. In total, there are 146 items you can scoop up on sale, all of which have Loll’s signature playful style.

Weekend Project: Prepping the Patio For Summer Fun

Wallter Post Planters

DP Peeps, it’s the longest day of the year. Do you know the state your patio (or deck, or balcony) is in? Are the kids still making up school days from all that snow this winter and you just haven’t gotten into the summer groove yet? Well, I’m here to tell you, it’s time to get on on it.

1. How dirty is it? Hose that sucker down, sweep it, leaf-blow if you must. Start with a clean base. Get your mulch and gravel spread out and looking good.

Oxford Gardens Chadwick 5 Foot Swing

2. Where are you going to sit/lounge/chow down? Moving on, what is the state of your outdoor furniture? Will someone need a tetanus shot before they risk it? If so, attack it with the wire brush, steel wool and rustoleum. Wash your outdoor slipcovers and pillows. If it’s too far gone, kick it to the curb and shop. Thanks to all of our great vendors we have a wide selection of outdoor furniture styles from traditional to contemporary.

OFFI Hugo Pots

3. Is there life out there? Did frozen water crack your favorite terracotta pots? Are they full of last year’s dead plants? Order up some cool planters to accessorize the area. Today’s pots light upcan be stuck in the ground, hang from the fences … there are so many cool options.

Oxford Garden Market Umbrella

4. Wanna throw some shade? How’s that umbrella doing? Is it moldy, faded, leaning oddly or unstable? Perk that baby up and clean it, or get a new one.

Modfire Urbanfire + Modpad

5. Ready for those cold and dark nights? Build a fire pit or buy one. It’s amazing how small and portable you can go with fire these days – it’s much easier than it was at camp. Also, be sure to light up your porch. Hurricanes are a great way to light things up with style, inexpensive cafe lights strung overhead make things starry (just make sure they are rated for outdoor use).

Cheers! You’re ready to mix up the white sangria and throw some veggie burgers on the grill (oh yes, almost forgot, make sure your stocked with charcoal or propane)!
