Million Dollar Decorators, Did You Watch?

I am a day behind on my DVR and just got around to watching Million Dollar Decorators on Bravo. I really don’t have anything snarky to say, like I usually do with Bravo shows. I liked everyone. I loved their style. I found the Sharon Osborne 3-days-to-get-the-apartment-ready scenario very contrived, but it was still fun to watch, and to see a project go from start to finish in one episode. Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s voice is simply fabulous and paired with his accent, totally cracks me up. Kathryn Ireland is someone I’d love to have a margarita with (provided her son didn’t make it a sneezer), Mary McDonald is fabulous as all get out, and I feel like I didn’t get to know Nathan or Jeffrey that well yet, but I love their style. While the Osborne apartment was a little bit of a yawn, all of these designers know how to mix and match unexpected colors, patterns, textures, pieces and finishes in unique ways, in fact, all of them are masters at it.

My notes are a boring as hell, but what the heck, often when blogging about shows I share them anyway. Perhaps it’s because I hadn’t had any wine when I was jotting them down! But enough about me, what did you think of the show? Will you continue to watch it each week?

Are any of the rest of you as obsessed with Jeff Lewis as I am? I think Flipping Out is BY FAR the most entertaining design show on television, and he’s one of the most entertaining people on television. I just wanted to shoot out a quick reminder to you other Ben Lomand Valley Oak Commonwealth Zoila Jenny Jeff Chloe Ryan Monkey Jet Sarah fans that the new season starts on Bravo tonight, 9 p.m. on the east coast.

9 By Design – What Did You Think?

So, 9 by Design wrapped up this week on Bravo. What did you think? I have to say, at first these people really got on my nerves – I think because everything was so hectic – pregnant woman running around moving furniture, six kids yelling, a crazy stressful move, name dropping, claiming to be southern with the oddest accents ever, and a hyper husband. However, these people have TOTALLY grown on me. I think it started when they ran to the flea market and completely transformed their temporary granny rental in about five minutes flat. Then I started to see how sweet they are about helping their friends, and how they scramble for the bucks. Let’s not get it twisted – they make multi, multi millions on the houses they flip, so don’t feel to sorry for them when you see them have a tag sale, however, I like that they are having a tag sale.

Another thing about them: I remember seeing their Great Barrington house (I think it was in Oprah at Home a few years ago) and I’ve never forgotten it. I remember seeing the yellow and white curtains by the front door and assuming it was Kate Spade’s house. I remember a picture of Madonna smoking over the bed, and those vintage stools, and it all made an impression on me. Lately, I see so much design and I’ve seen the same old things blogged and printed in glossies over and over, it’s rare that something stands out (oh, and I should mention, I can feel myself writing the same things over and over – a phenomenon I call “deja blog”). When something is that memorable, I have to respect it. All and all, I’d give this show a thumbs up. It was certainly heading in the right direction by the end of the season – less hectic home stuff, more start to finish projects in a range of sizes, and I think it will have a great season two.

Side Note: I think we need to add oversized sepia tone horse photographs to our design drinking games. I am seeing them EVERYWHERE lately!

Oh, P.S. – you can buy an Ann Carrington Print of the Queen here.

9 By Design Premieres Tonight!

Those who know me know I have a very unhealthy obsession with most everything that’s on Bravo (except Launch My Line and Shear Genius, which are not up to snuff). To give those of us who long for the return of Flipping Out a renovation/flipping fix, they are presenting us with 9 By Design. It follows this family named Novogratz – When I saw the previews, I recognized a few of the homes this couple has renovated from magazines past. I never forgot the one in the Berkshires with the yellow striped curtains. The first time I saw it, I assumed it belonged to Kate Spade:

Anyway, the Novogratz clan includes a zillion kids, hence this photo from the Bravo website, the likes of which are usually only seen on TV specials about polygamists. I think someone should send them a better toothbrush holding system as their next house warming present, as this is totally gross – you would NEVER catch Jeff Lewis pulling something like this. I suppose when living in a construction zone, they may all have to share one bathroom like the Brady Bunch? I guess we’ll find out on the show. That would totally suck.

The couple also penned this really cool book, Downtown Chic: Designing Your Dream Home From Wreck to Ravishing. Did I mention that their design firm is called SIXX DESIGN? I wonder if they will change that to SevvenDesign now that they have another kid?

The show starts up April 13 at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time, 10:00 Central on Bravo. I think I’m taping a half-hour preview show at 3 a.m., which is only three hours away.

  • First image swiped from Moodboard who swiped it from the now-defunct Oprah at Home magazine. Photographed by Joshua McHugh. Also, Moodboard has posted all the pictures from that O spread. I think I might have blogged that photo with the stools like two years ago – it gave me deja-blog when I saw it, and I never forgot that smoking Madonna portrait. That was a pretty cool magazine – I was sad to see it go.
  • Second image from bravotv.com. Check out more information about the show and the Novogratz family over there.
  • Third image from amazon.com – click on that for ordering information.

Oh, P.S.! If anyone wants to have a little chat party about the show on Wednesday, let me know in the comments section here and I’ll start one up! I’ve learned not to commit to one before I find out whether or not a show is worth chatting about.
