At first, Gwenyth Paltrow’s website, GOOP, annoyed me to no end. I don’t know why, because I really like her – as an actress, she seems really cool, and one time on Oprah she described a hilarious teenage prank she and her friend played on Arnold Schwartzenegger when he lived next door to her family and it’s made me like her ever since. But GOOP seemed so pretentious and name-droppy. However, since then I have heard her explain that she has been able to do a lot of extraordinary things in her life, and wants to share what she finds out with her friends and anyone else who wants to know as well, so I’m softening on the whole GOOP thing, sitting back, and enjoying the newsletters. Unless they have to do with Tracy Anderson – those just make me feel irrationally bad that I am not size 00 and that I don’t survive on fish and kale.

Today there is a post about how Annette Joseph renovated Gwynnie’s temporary apartment in Nashville that was really fun to read – the apartment was ripped down to a shell, rebuilt and re-decorated in TEN DAYS! The only thing I don’t like are those cheap knockoffs from the discount website – if I’m going to get an iconic chair, I’m not going to settle for some Canal Streetish wannabe, copycat version of it, I’m going to save and save and get the one that’s really special. Wow, I ‘m just full of personal opinions in this quick link post, perhaps I should just give you the link and shut the heck up! Here’s a teaser, starring a sofa from Blu Dot:

I found myself feeling really happy when I looked at this picture last night and then started scouring flickr for some favorite black and white (and charcoal) images to share with you in tomorrow’s “Flickr Faves on Fridays” post. Then I thought, why not share the image that inspired me in the first place as well? It comes from our very own Ali Beckford, who is a super-stylist and photographer (and hilarious, when you click over to her blog, make sure to check out this post). She and he professional photographer S.O. Cooper love to snag their neighbor’s toss-aside furniture from their hallway and they scored big time with this dresser.

As for some of the other pieces, Ali tracked down the camera print after spotting it in this Unison Porter bedding shot:

The artist is Rod Hunting. The vintage clock came from an old school in Olympia Washington. Doesn’t it remind you of being bored out of your mind in some high school class, praying for the second hand to move, thinking that the bell was NEVER going to ring!

Yesterday I posted an interview with Andrew Gregory over at Houzz.com and I wanted to share it with you as well. Andrew is great at taking interior shots, and one of my goals for 2010 is to do a better job of taking better photos. Step one will be to figure out where I hid the battery charger with my cell phone batteries in it. Step two will be to take Holly Becker’s blogging class. I feel like I’ve plateaued with the blogging a bit and could use a shot in the arm and some more interaction with other bloggers – I’d love to meet you and check out your blogs – introduce yourself in the comments section if you are interested! Our blogroll needs and update as well and we’d love to add more design bloggers. While working on steps one and two, I’ll keep hoarding foreign glossies, checking out the photographers featured at Desire to Inspire, and looking to people like Andrew Gregory and those of you who add your own great photos to our Fresh New Spaces group on flickr!

Today I have been admiring this Gastown loft in Vancouver B.C. that I found in our fresh new spaces group on flickr. Thanks so much to flickr member to be, inspired for sharing this! At first, you might browse on by and think “oh big whoop, another gorgeous loft with big windows, exposed brick and beams and huge open space.” However, look closer. This owner really knows how to balance things to perfection. It’s not too rugged, not too sleek. Not too modern, not too eclectic. It’s just right:

This loft strikes a great balance between sleek, modern furniture and some classic glitz; between structural elements like ebony wood cabinets and more worn patinas, like the exposed brick walls and slightly rough-hewn posts. Sticking to the a neutral color palette allows the wide array of textures to stand out.

For more about this loft, link over to this post at To Be, Inspired. Also, this post is hilarious. If you want to learn more about the owner, Sally, click here. She is someone I would love to hang out with!

both images from flickr member to be, inspired, specifically, Ryan. Doesn’t this beautiful photography enhance the palette and style of this space even more? As I watched the slideshow from our group, every one of their photos was obviously theirs.

Yesterday I gave you a peek at some of my friend Lucas’s clever artwork tricks. Today I thought I’d show you his balcony, which is in this flickr set. This loft is right around the corner from The King Center in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward. Lucas has really made the most of his balcony. It overlooks Freedom Parkway, Downtown, and Midtown. I was at a party at Casa Luca last week and at one point there were at least seven of us seated comfortably out there.

He has softened modern pieces with pillows, plants, and a rug. At night, he brings out his rechargeable lanterns from Vessel (on the chair in the top photo). Once you lounge on this daybed, you NEVER want to get up. The fabric is weather-resistant, and he also has a cover for it.

Lucas likes to take some time out to enjoy The View. And when he turns his head sideways, he gets this view. Not too shabby!
