Eight Great Ways to Light Up the Night

Summer is the best time to spend evenings outdoors. But chances are, the spotlights on the side of your house don’t exactly give the best ambiance, and you don’t have enough lightening bugs to keep things bright enough. Here are eight unique choices to improve your outdoor lighting scheme this summer.

65032_1.jpg1. Firelight. The Blomus Orchos Gel Garden Torch. This sleek stainless steel and wood torch will add just the right amount of FIRELIGHT to your party, at a height of 60 inches.  We’ve carefully curated a handful of other contemporary torches at Design Public. conic_pot_tall2

2. Pot lights.  OFFI Conic Pots. These amazing planters pull double-duty at night; a low-voltage lamp will illuminate a modern glow at your get-together.

13740_58ff7c3dc73. Lights Up! The Beach Outdoor Floor Lamp. Bring it right out to wherever the cord can reach; this floor lamp looks like it belongs in the living room but it is IP54 rated for all-weather use.

4. Garden lights. Seletti Bellavista Garden LED Lights (set of 10) can wrap a trellis, drop from an arbor or dangle from the trees like magic. They come with either a white or black cord, your choice.

5. A ship’s lamp. The Stelton Ship’s Lamp This is no ordinary ship’s lamp, however. This is the ship’s lamp to end all other ship’s lamps. Erik Magnussen’s sleek cylindrical design keeps the wind at bay, and the minimalist design means it fits in anywhere and everywhere — I’m talking the ground. I’m talking on the table. I’m talking hung from above. If you’re not quite ready for it, it does come in a smaller size.

6. Drum lights. Cane-Line Drum Outdoor Lamps are simple cylinders that emit soft light in the shape of a drum. The proportions of these lamps are just right — cylinders that are 15.75 inches high and 9.8 inches in diameter.

7. A Candle on a Pole. That’s right. We could’t keep the candle off the pole. For those of you who don’t like to mess with newfangled gels and other flammables, I totally get it. So go old school. The blomus Atmo Candle Holder with Pole is for people like us.

CALA-L_WB_4.jpg8. Lanterns. Here’s another one for those of us who prefer lighting that requires a wick and a match. The Skargaarden Marstrand Candle Lantern is a simple hurricane that keeps the wind away, wrapped in a rich leather that adds a textural touch.

Of course if you prefer something more minimalist and not one bit fussy, we have plenty of lanterns and hurricanes for you to choose from.

Here at Design Public, we’re gearing up for back to school and homework time with a series of guides to workstation products. There are a ton of fantastic sales going on at Design Public right now. As we get ready for that dreaded “fall back” day when we’ll be in darkness an hour earlier, it’s time to cheer up the house with the right lighting. We’ve slashed prices on some of our new classic, most popular pieces from modern pendants to funky table lamps, so I thought I’d introduce a few of them to you.

David Trubridge Kina Pendant Lamp

Right now, all David Trubridge is 15% off (through October 31, 2013). This is the David Trubridge Kina Pendant Lamp. I’ve noticed architects and interior designers scooping up this beautiful natural bamboo pendant. The shape was inspired by the structure of sea urchins.

Kartell Bourgie Lamp

Now through October 27, 2013, Kartell is 20% off, including the ever-popular Bourgie Lamp. Now that warm metals are back in style, you may want the bling of gold, but you can also choose chrome-plated, white or black matte. This silhouette is something a modern-day Marie Antoinette would appreciate, like if Sofia Coppola remade her movie again, in present day.

Kartell FL/Y Suspension Lamp

Kartell also makes the FL/Y Suspension Lamp, which comes in a rainbow of bright colors and has become a design staple. The pendant light adds a classic modern shape, bubbly personality and a punch of bold color.

Pablo Tube Top Colored Table Lamp

Now through October 24, 2013, all Pablo is 15% off. Pablo is one of the very first brands we ever carried and it’s been such a joy to see the company take off and see the designs placed in so many gorgeous design magazine spreads. The Pablo Tube Top Table Lamp is one of the mot popular table lamps I’ve noticed in modern and contemporary rooms; it also adds an eclectic touch to more traditional and collected room styles. The photo above just makes me happy, like a roll of LifeSavers.

The Pablo Link Task Lamp

The Pablo Link Task Lamp has a personality that makes me want to give each one it’s own name, each a funky character and will illuminate your desk or your bedtime reading with adjustable style.

So that’s just a teaser of just a few of the great lighting (in addition to many other pieces of furniture and accessories) deals we have going on. October is a great time to adjust your lighting and cozy up for winter, and there won’t be a better time than now to save big. What are you waiting for?

Patrick Townsend’s White Orbit Chandelier Is Back!

Becky

I try not to play favorites, but Patrick Townsend’s White Orbit Chandelier is an ingenious work of lighting art I’ve always admired. I’ve also admired what a bunch of different creatives have done with it – placing it in rooms that are traditional, eclectic, modern, transitional and contemporary with aplomb.

by Kimberly Peck, Architect

Urban Global Style. I love the way the Orbit looks with exposed brick. Especially when the rest of the room is mostly white.

by Susan Manrao Design

Clean and Contemporary. Susan Manrao uses it to navigate all of that empty space supplied by very high ceilings.

by Sarah Yates

Eclectic and Colorful. We’re so grateful that Design Public customer Sarah Yates sent us these photos of her Orbit in action against her colorful wall hanging and dark wall. Loving that aqua bullet planter and bright yellow shell chair too – what a great dining room she has (check out more of it here).

by sfgirlbybay

Modern Bohemian. Love love love when Victoria finally hung hers (I think she’s moved a few times since then, if you follow her blog, but I loved the round up she did here of more Orbits in action).

by Wettling Architects

Cozy and Collected. The Orbit fits right in without taking over in this quirky and cozy eat-in kitchen nook by Wettling Architects, adding a contemporary geometric object to the vintage metal letters, pedestal table, suzani fabric and the rest of the mix.

Industrial. Finally, I love the look of the Orbit against a gritty loft wall like this one. It’s industrial yet refined.

Ready to get one now that they are back? Learn more about them and check out other colors here.
