This week’s flickr fave comes from flickr member hindsvik. Antique stores have been chock full of card catalogs ever since computer monitor have become the main storage for the Dewey Decimal System. It’s kind of sad really, that today’s kids will never have the experience of flipping through index cards and actually understanding alphabetical order, but the good news is, they make for great home decor items. I love the contrast of these two colors and styles of card catalogs here – it works like a sculpture. This is the epitome of “vintage modern” style!
You can check out Hindsvik’s blog here and get the look with help from their etsy shop.
How would you use a unit like this? What would you store in it?

O.K., I admit it. I’m on vacation, and I forgot to bring the little cord that hooks up my camera to my computer, so I’m going to post something about whatever I can find in my iPhone pictures. This narrows it down to the furniture making place I went the other day near Lincolnville Beach. It is a picturesque spread full of unbelievably beautiful handmade Shaker-inspired furniture, crafted from gorgeous wood. When we are so used to cruising around the internet or the mall in search of furniture, sometimes we lose touch with where it came from. I am lucky enough to get to go to furniture shows and meet designers and artisans because I work for Design Public, but I forget that customers don’t always have those same attachments. It’s so nice to visit a place like this and remember where the furniture comes from, and the traditions of craft that have been passed down for generations.

If you do get to the Penobscot Bay area this summer, you must stop by and see all of this beautiful furniture for yourself at Windsor Cabinetmakers. For more information, click here.

I found myself feeling really happy when I looked at this picture last night and then started scouring flickr for some favorite black and white (and charcoal) images to share with you in tomorrow’s “Flickr Faves on Fridays” post. Then I thought, why not share the image that inspired me in the first place as well? It comes from our very own Ali Beckford, who is a super-stylist and photographer (and hilarious, when you click over to her blog, make sure to check out this post). She and he professional photographer S.O. Cooper love to snag their neighbor’s toss-aside furniture from their hallway and they scored big time with this dresser.
As for some of the other pieces, Ali tracked down the camera print after spotting it in this Unison Porter bedding shot:

The artist is Rod Hunting. The vintage clock came from an old school in Olympia Washington. Doesn’t it remind you of being bored out of your mind in some high school class, praying for the second hand to move, thinking that the bell was NEVER going to ring!

As I perused our Fresh New Spaces pool, this great vignette caught my eye:

This shot is from flickr member Alyn Carlson. She’s a graphic designer – you can check out her inspirations at her blog, colorgirl, and you can check out her work here.

O.K. I promised you a little more Eileen Gray last week, so here goes…
Chest of drawers, early 1920s
These remind me of those awesome new Claude modular dressers that Jonathan Adler just designed. I feel like he must have been inspired by Eileen when he sat down to sketch.
Bedroom from the Rue Bonaparte apartment. How sexy is this?
Transat chairs, circa 1925-1930
I love seeing original sketches like these! These are part of the collection at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
All images via Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture by Phillipe Garner and published by TASCHEN. I highly recommend adding it to your design library. It’s available used at Amazon for about $10!
