Modern Inspiration

30poss1901.jpgDo you have something that holds a permanent spot on your inspiration board, that has helped your ideas flow for years and years? I loved this charming piece on the author Douglas Coupland in Sunday’s New York Times. It figures that the author who captured the zeitgeist of Generation X and the technology bubble (Microserfs - personally I liked that one better, maybe because I am a member of Gen X, I don’t know), chose this cusp-of-the-eighties postcard from Fiorucci 1979. It did seem a sign of everything that was to come, and it affected Coupland so deeply that he dumped science for art then and there. I don’t think a postcard has ever done that much for me, but I do know that are quite a few images from bulletin boards that seem to make the cut during every clean-out and every move. Care to share yours?

New York Design Week Wrap Up

Matty

Well about a week and a half have past since the traveling circus formerly known as “New York Design Week” officially closed its doors for another year. I’m so burnt out on all things design-related I think I need an official “Design Detox Day” to recalibrate. (You know, eat corndogs, listen to the Ramones. . . maybe race go-carts and watch Dumb and Dumber.)

But I digress. In all seriousness, we saw SO MUCH exciting design in New York this year that it’s a little tricky to get your head around.

In effort to centralize and make sense of all the events that transpired we have a little New York Design Week recap page where we’ve been linking our favorite headlines from around the Web — we’ve also posted plenty of photos from the Brooklyn Designs Show and ICFF. Take a look: designpublic.com/nydesignweek.

Film Screening: “Antonio Gaudi”

cid_3131090.jpg For those of you in NYC  for Design Week , you are going to need some excuses to give your aching feet a rest.  Try to catch "Antonio Gaudi" at The Center for Architecture . The film is being presented as part of The Barcelona in Progress Exhibit , which runs through June 10.

The screening will take place at 6:30, and you’ll be out in time for dinner.  If you plan to attend, RSVP here.  Personally, after having a panic attack DESCENDING tower stairs in the Sagrada Familia, marked by intense vertigo and my legs turning to rubber, I don’t know if I could quite handle "the beauty of Teshigahara’s camera gliding through the Sagrada Familia, set to Toru Takemitsu’s expressive score" on the big screen, but it sounds like it is an exceptional film.  Gaudi is one of my all time favorites, especiallly Parc Guell.  Darn it, my own Barcelona photos are in some album in my childhood bedroom closet, so I’ve borrowed the one to the left from great buildings.com.   I’m sure any of their photos are better than my own anyway.

The Center for Architecture is located at 536 LaGuardia Place.
