New York Design Week Wrap Up

Well about a week and a half have past since the traveling circus formerly known as “New York Design Week” officially closed its doors for another year. I’m so burnt out on all things design-related I think I need an official “Design Detox Day” to recalibrate. (You know, eat corndogs, listen to the Ramones. . . maybe race go-carts and watch Dumb and Dumber.)

But I digress. In all seriousness, we saw SO MUCH exciting design in New York this year that it’s a little tricky to get your head around.

In effort to centralize and make sense of all the events that transpired we have a little New York Design Week recap page where we’ve been linking our favorite headlines from around the Web — we’ve also posted plenty of photos from the Brooklyn Designs Show and ICFF. Take a look: designpublic.com/nydesignweek.

Design Public and Build.org kids Last Tuesday Drew and I darted from Design Public HQ early and headed to the East Bay to meet up with a handful of talented freshmen from Oakland Tech. Schuyler, Alex, Robin and Kenny are all taking part in the BUILD program – here’s a little background:

"BUILD empowers youth from low-income communities to excel in the classroom, on the job, and beyond by giving them an education in entrepreneurship. By encouraging students to develop their own small businesses, BUILD extends traditional entrepreneurial education far beyond the classroom and provides students with real-world business experiences."

I was tasked with discussing the design process, creativity, and inspiration while Drew spearheaded a conversation on entrepreneurship. Overall, things went GREAT. We brainstormed creative ideas for their business venture (a new tee-shirt company) and wolfed down some delicious pizza. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about BUILD, definitely check out their website.

Milton GlaserMy graphic designer friend Gary (& the lead singer in my old punk band) just gave me the heads up on some incredible videos on the Hillman Curtis site. If you are a designer or architect and have a penchant for zoning out and drooling over beautiful work do yourself a favor and take a look at these short films. My favorites are the Milton Glaser, David Carson and Stefan Sagmeister videos. Really inspiring stuff and beautifully executed.

Matteo Yesterday was "Matteo Appreciation Day" here at Design Public HQ. Matt Lenoci and Jackie Hernandez from Matteo came up to San Francisco from L.A. to check in with us and show us their new Spring line. In short, this is some of the most amazing stuff we’ve seen. Matt’s attention to detail and knowledge of luxury linens is simply astounding. After reviewing the new line and talking shop we then scored some delicious crêpes and quiche at our local haunt, Butler and the Chef ! Thanks for stopping by guys!

The NEW Vessel StoreHolly over at decor8 informed us that Vessel (Candela, Squat, Candeloo etc.) have a NEW storefront now in downtown Boston. Being a Boston native myself I had to give some love to the local boys who done good. Congrats fellas!

Now, if you’re wondering who is this rogue blogger on "Hatch"? I’m the Design Public web/creative/everything else guy and this is my (gasp) third post! I’m sure my parents will call at any moment to discuss my new found fame…

Anyhoo, if you’re in or around the Hub, go check it out at 125 Kingston Street. If not, you can see some great pics of the interior via Holly’s design blog. Go Vessel . Go Sox!
