Want to know who’s cool? Patrick Chirico, the designer behind Build Your Block. For one, he has a dapper looking dog and you’ve gotta check out his DIY home garden for urban spaces. Oh, and he makes sweet pillow scenes too…that we already knew. Enjoy the Q&A!
What about Brooklyn do you absolutely love?
All types of food morning, afternoon and night; the architecture and bridges; the people and fashion; the smorgasbord of style, history, and culture.
Have you lived anywhere else?
I’m from Northern, NY. Watertown to be more specific which is polar opposite of the responses above, but I still love it.
Describe your typical work day.
Well I run two companies full time and most of my day is taken up with WrecordsByMonkey, which is a interior and jewelry company that makes everything from vinyl records. I send emails and work on projects and new designs. Then my afternoons, nights and days off are spent slaving over emails and orders for Build Your Block and trying to glue everything together.
Please share five things/people/places that inspire you.
Gotta give Gerrit a big high five for his installation of the Inhabit Seesaw Wall Flats in his minimalist dining room. Can you imagine the room without the texture of the wall flats? I certainly can’t. No doubt, minimalism is so much better with a little bit of character. Good show, Gerrit!
How would you describe your design style? Modern/minimalist
Any design pet peeves? Tan colored walls

Look! Mini Area Bruno beds! Anki Spets, founder of Area, was asked to design a table for the DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) Dining by Design event held in NYC. Anki designed a table setup with 10 miniature Bruno beds with Area bedding and little figurines in the beds reading the NY Times (the table sponsor). She used different Area fabrics to tile the background of the booth.
They also gave each diner a piece of clay to be creative during dinner (a great little ice breaker!). Nice show, Anki! Love it!
Program your DVRs, set your TiVos and get the VHS tape ready to record, Kiersten Hathcock from Mod Mom Furniture will be on this Friday’s (4/1) 8pm/7pm central episode of Shark Tank on ABC. In the preview above you’ll see Kiersten for a second say “Everything is riding on this.” Ohhhhh the suspense! A hint as to how it went down, ABC put out a blurb that says “sharks fight over mother’s furniture company.” Gooooooo Kiersten!
Yes folks, even our attorney has a house full of Design Public goodies. Actually, out of all of our customer profiles Cyrus wins the prize for having the greatest number of DP products in his home. Well done, Cyrus! Your places looks stellar.
What’s your favorite DP product and why? The Wallter Slat Rack for sure. It’s right by our front door and we hang all our coats, hats, keys, etc. on it every day. It’s generally buried with stuff so we can’t see it, but love it anyway.
How would you describe your design style? Minimalist. Don’t have much stuff, but take a lot of time to think about each thing that comes into the house and how it fits.
