Decorating for a Modern Holiday

It’s time to start planning decorations for a modern holiday. One of my favorite Thanksgiving posts of all time was written by Dwell Studio’s founder, Christiane Lemieux awhile back. You can revisit it here. Here’s a little teaser:

Since I didn’t grow up with all the trappings of an American Thanksgiving, I felt free to create my own tradition. On this holiday, the meal itself will be the center of attention, so you don’t need to do much in the way of decorating. The rich cranberry red, the warm orange of pumpkin and sweet potatoes, the perfect honey brown of a crisp turkey — it’s already a gorgeous color palette.

She let the food be the star of the show by using beautiful monochromatic linens. It’s such a nice balance:

Thinking ahead to Hanukkah, how happy are you with your menorah? If you’re looking to break with tradition and try something more modern, there are tons of options out there. I love this organic one from Flickr member Less&More:

I also love the simplicity of this understated menorah by Josh Owen:

Thinking ahead to Christmas, we’re finding inspiration from our Fresh New Spaces Group on Flickr. Thanks to Flickr member citrusandorange for switching up our ideas about sticking with red and green:

Branches and beautiful vintage ornaments in unexpected colors make for beautiful vignettes.

Speaking of vintage, Flickr member Electica Miamiadded ths fun vignette, which makes me feel nostalgic for my old Flexible Flyer:

Flickr member Peezeth knows how to keep things minimal, sleek, and subtly festive:

Flickr member 1richtungsblog kept things limited to gold and white, adding sophisticated holiday style:

How will you be decorating for the holidays? PLEASE share your photos from the past and present with us in our Fresh New Spaces Group, or share links in the comments section to wherever you have them posted online.

Guest Post: DIY Ideas to Freshen Your Throwaway Furniture

Hi Everyone! We know you may be over here shopping for new furniture, but here at Design Public, we love to mix old and new. So while you peruse for the perfect wallpaper or a new big boy bed, consider pieces you may already own to go with them. Here’s Alex Levin , a writer for Granite Transformations (a green remodeling company that advances sustainable construction practices reducing waste and recycling, such as using broken Skyy vodka bottles to make countertops), with some helpful hints about how to re-use and repurpose. take it away Alex!

In today’s economy, replacing outdated, broken or just plain ugly furniture isn’t always affordable. Furthermore, tossing old furniture also costs the earth. Learn to look beyond the finish of a piece of furniture to reveal the construction, design and material underneath. Here are some ideas to get your started.
Potential Projects:
Lightening up old pieces: Worried that your dark brown antique buffet table will look out of place in your new home – but you love the shape? Paint it a bright bold color that will play off other items in the room and throughout  your home.
Freshen up a wardrobe: Strip, sand and paint one white for child’s room. Add funky hardware (knobs and pulls can be changed out as your kids grow up).
Reupholster a sofa or chairs: Choose a fabric you like, and find a matching glossy paint for the wood frame and legs. You’ll need ribbon and adhesive glue to keep it in place, upholstery tacks and a staple gun.
Wooden tables, desks and cupboards. Whether you want to paint or sand down to restore the original finish is up to you. Kitchen cupboards gain a whole new lease of life through simple repainting, while desks can look completely
different through a coat of gloss and a new stencil design.
Getting Started
1. Evaluate your existing furniture. Make necessary repairs; fix wobbly legs, fill cracks, and take care of any other structural problems.
2. Look at the finish. Assess if you need to strip and sand before refinishing/painting.
3. Gather supplies. Round up everything from the dust cover to protect the floor to the paintbrush. You may need to purchase a few safety items, like gloves and goggles.
4. Choose a workspace. Factor in the weather, ventilation, and upcoming  in-law visits.
Upcycling: Repurpose an Old Item  to Make Something New
Here are a few ideas:
  • Place an old door atop two filing cabinets to create a hard-working desk.
  • Turn plastic bottles into chandeliers
  • Make an Adirondack chair from old baseball bats
  • Turn an iron into a bedside lamp for a unique retro look
  • Transform a clawfoot bathtub into a sofa
  • Turn a discarded dishwasher drum into a modern coffee table
Refurbishing old furniture is easier than you think, and is also a lot of fun. A few quick fixes can help your inherited old pieces fit into contemporary surroundings, save you cash and save the planet.

Stay Tuned for Fun, Modern Holiday Gift Guides

I know you’re still munching on your kids’ Halloween Candy, but November means one thing – and I’m not talking about turkey. It is time to get a jump start on your holiday shopping, and the peeps at Design Public have been working hard adding new products and highlighting some of our favorites for the Holiday season. This year’s gift guides will feature products for all of your loved ones. Here’s a little teaser to get your gift-giving creative wheels turning:
Well first off, I can whole-heartedly endorse this product because it was given to me as a gift and I was gob-smacked. It’s the Thomas Paul Octopus Shower Curtain. It’s perfect for that person who loves the aquarium, octopi, or Sea of Shoes (that amazing blogger is responsible for my octopus love). It’s also perfect for someone who has a ho-hum bathroom and a pathetically boring shower curtain. Just be warned that this sea creature will dominate the entire room, and all other elements will have to tread water around it.
Wondering about that bathmat? It’s a great alternative for someone who may not want their bathroom taken over by an 8-legged beast. It’s the Thomas Paul Shell Bath Mat. It’s also a great complement to said beast because it’s in the same colorway and has similar graphic style.
A smaller way to add octopi to your home décor is via the smashing Octopus Tea Towels. I use them as hand towels in my bathroom, but they are also great in the kitchen of course.
Next, another one of our all-time best sellers is the David Weeks Cubebot:
This thing is awesome for kids and grown ups alike. You can put him into all kinds of Hans and Franz-esque poses. Personally, I like to sneak in, re-pose him and leave it as a surprise for his owner:
He also transforms into a simple wooden cube, one that can be opened and provide fun surprises:
Finally, another one of our most popular, stylish and functional items is the Fatboy Junior, a modern beanbag that is perfect for lounging…
…or sitting up straight:
I first fell up with the grown up version at The International Contemporary Furniture Fair. How? Fatboy had plopped a field of these down in the middle of the show for all of us to flop down and try to save our tired feet.
Stay tuned to Hatch: The Design Public Blog for help shopping for the season. You won’t have to leave your sofa to find something for everyone on your list.

Flickr Faves on Fridays: Bringing the Leaves Indoors

Once again, a flickr favorite came from Flickr member Saidos da Concha, who added them to our Fresh New Spaces Group. Blogger Concha has moved from Lisbon Portugal to Staffordshire England. She’s obviously finding some beautiful leaves around the countryside to bring into her English home, adding organic autumnal style. What I really like is that rather than going for the typical firey red and brilliant orange leaves we’re used to seeing in fall decorating, she included leaves that were still half-green and light yellow. I never would have thought of this:

Don’t you just want to plan a room around the colors in those leaves on the left side of the mantle? It’s such a beautiful color palette! I also love the way she’s tied in the sweet little gourds, the bird prints, and the books in this mantle arrangement. Simple clear glass vases let the leaves be the stars.

A master of tablescapes and shelf arranging, once again Concha has created a beautiful and fun composition here. The grahpics on the posters are crisp, more intricate little works of art are mixed in, stacks of books that could be total pulp (though I do spy some literary classics) add another layer, and a mustachioed rabbit and a fun little car top off the piles of books. It’s so much fun! I also love the way she tucked these leaves behing the sconce. They will cast interesting shadows at night when the lights are on.

If you’re struggling with ideas for your Thanksgiving decorations, why not take a look around at the leaves outside, grab a pair of pruners, and swipe a few?

Mad Fashion on Bravo

Have you been watching Mad Fashion on Bravo? I have, as I pretty much watch everything on Bravo, well, except for Most Eligible Dallas, which looks too awful even for me. Anyway, I loved Chris March on Project Runway because he’s so creative and hilarious, and it’s so much fun to see him in his element, creating costumes like a Mardi Gras outfit for Jennifer Coolidge.

See that fab rug in the background? Yeah, we got that. It’s the Thomas Paul Flock Dhurrie in Green and Cream, and it will ground your room with a vibrant layer of a rich mossy green oversized pattern. The Thomas Paul Rug Collection is made of high quality wool with the finest construction available. It’s kind of baroque-goes-modern:

Never in a million years would I have thought to pair it with hot pink, but in the case of March’s studio, it works.

Have you been watching Mad Fashion? What has your favorite challenge been? The most shocking thing to me is that the clients tend to hire him about two days before a crazy event and they whip something together in no time flat! I’m just hoping that one day someone will actually choose to wear one of Izzy Decauwert’s fabulous wigs – she puts so much time and love into them and it seems no one ever opts to top of their outfit with her creation. Where do crazy unused wigs go after such rejection? The Wendy Williams Show?

Besides seeing Jennifer Coolidge, who is always hilarious on TV and movies and in “real life,” Dina Manzo’s closet was my other favorite thing about this show. It was so much larger than my entire house and it’s shoe heaven. Totally insane:

Anyway, if you haven’t caught this little gem of a show it really is delightful. Check it out on Bravo; I’m sure it’s on like ten times a week like every other show on Bravo!
