Want to know who’s cool? Patrick Chirico, the designer behind Build Your Block. For one, he has a dapper looking dog and you’ve gotta check out his DIY home garden for urban spaces. Oh, and he makes sweet pillow scenes too…that we already knew. Enjoy the Q&A!

What about Brooklyn do you absolutely love?

All types of food morning, afternoon and night; the architecture and bridges; the people and fashion; the smorgasbord of style, history, and culture.

Have you lived anywhere else?

I’m from Northern, NY.  Watertown to be more specific which is polar opposite of the responses above, but I still love it.

Describe your typical work day.

Well I run two companies full time and most of my day is taken up with WrecordsByMonkey, which is a interior and jewelry company that makes everything from vinyl records. I send emails and work on projects and new designs.  Then my afternoons, nights and days off are spent slaving over emails and orders for Build Your Block and trying to glue everything together.

Please share five things/people/places that inspire you.

My environment, My fiancee, godmother, family, and friends. The 5 boroughs of NYC, Erte, found objects/ old things/ well crafted items.

What advice would you give aspiring designers?

Failure is a part of success and don’t be afraid to work 80hour weeks! Be yourself, and stay determined. Time management.

Do you collect anything? Tell us of your treasures….Any prized possessions?

Just about everything. I’m sure dirt could be one as long you explain it to me properly. Well I’ve had coin, marble, and rock collections since I was like 8, but I more recently collect small art pieces, handmade books, hand blown glass marbles, tops, and sculptures.

Finally, what is next for Build Your Block?

By Fall we’re going to release Philly and San Francisco. The goal is to expand into more major cities as the company expands. We’ll also be continuing to add to our NYC buildings with a few more pillowcase sets, and getting a barber shop, coffee shop and auto place.

Thanks Patrick!

About Ali:
I enjoy wood paneled station wagons, German food and senior citizens (I am 80 years old at heart). Nearly every weekend I am taking photos at other people's weddings and I have a blog of my own (but I don't update it often enough). I love to paint, sew and knit. Check out my DP Staff profile on Hatch.

My mother gave my husband and I Patrick Chirico’s Brooklyn Bridge Pillow Case Set as going away gift (we’re moving to London). What a great idea and a wonderful way to remember our favorite city while we are far away from it. Thank you, Patrick. Very awesome work!
