Not to be gross, but I’ve had a heck of a cough and cold this week which inspired me to figure out how to finally try and clean my laptop screen. I’m scared to touch it, like the wrong tiny bit of moisture would completely ruin it, thus ending my life as I know it and taking away my ability to earn a living!
After checking out products and advice, I found that one of the best, cheapest, and eco-friendly guides was at howtocleanthings.com. Thanks to Eric Ronning for the great advice. I’m out to buy some distilled water and vinegar and get to work!

FYI, if apple can ever find evidence that you did this (i.e. a drop of water or vinegar anywhere inside your machine) they will terminate your applecare for reasons of negligence or improper care. This literally happened to me after I had only had the computer a few months and sent it in for some hard drive repair. As near as I can tell, the only way to clean it without damaging the screen or risking losing your applecare is to use the iKlear system, which apple endorses and sells.
There is an overview of their official policies here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3226 but they don’t tell you about the “one drop” rule.
Also, if you do have a macbook (as pictured), then windex will remove any dirt on the white body and works extremely well.
