A Little Cottage Mystery Answered

My friend Wicki and I walk around her neighborhood, Ormewood, a lot, and she’s told me about some sort of poetry club’s cottage that we could never seem to find. I was so excited to find the answers in The Atlanta-Journal Constitution yesterday. The 100 year anniversary of the Burns Cottage is happening this year. The cottage was built by Robert Burns fans a century ago of granite (the thatched roof was replaced with shingles a few years back for practical purposes). It is “a building unique in the world: the only exact replica of the Robert Burns cottage near Alloway, Scotland.”

I’m a sucker for stories about mysterious structures. Not since Lex Luthor had his castle imported on Smallville (yes, I’m a Smallville nerd) have I seen such a fun example of importing a bit of architectural inspiration from Scotland to the U.S.A. Now I know where it is and there are some rare opportunities for non-members to get inside. The Burns Society is having several events to celebrate the Centennial of the building of their clubhouse. To learn more, check out the whole article here. The pictures from the article were not available online today, but luckily, the poetryfoundation.org had a post with this picture included:

Since our Co-Founder Drew has been all over the interwebs this week, I thought it was a good time to show his office organization tip. Take it away Drew!

What We’re Eating:
Heirloom Tomato Salad, Spinach Goat Cheese Frittata & Bacon

Fall brunch

Inspired by a conversation with our friends at DwellStudio I thought it be fun to mirror their “What We’re Eating” posts with a few of our own. The joke revolved around the fact that I noticed the DwellStudio ladies were always noshing on the most delectable, fashion-forward treats in their SOHO offices. This is how DwellStudio snack time typically unfolds:

“Hey girls, I just flew in from (an amazing fashion show) in Paris.  I picked up some macaroons lightly dusted with gold powder and 99% organic shade grown cacao! Aren’t they just lovely! Sigh…”

Meanwhile… not a mile away at the New York Design Public office in Madison Park my brother Drew and I usually find ourselves face down in a pile of cold cuts or scooping copious amounts of raw protein powder into our mouths. We’re dudes.

In any case, sometimes we take a break from “guy food” and actually eat healthy, simple food fit for Michael Pollan and your annoying friends from San Francisco (Just kidding I love San Francisco).

Here’s last weekend’s Fall brunch: A delicious heirloom tomato salad, a spinach/goat cheese frittata and finally, INCREDIBLE locally raised bacon from Glynwood Farms in Cold Spring New York. Everything except for the bacon was procured at the Union Square Farmers Market in NYC (I went to the farm to get the bacon — but that’s another blog post!):

Environmental Tuesday Links: “You’re Washing Your Hands on the Top of the Toilet?!?!”

1) I related so much to this New York Times article last week about feeling guilty about our green failures. Sometimes it feels like you can’t win, or you have one habit you know is not very good for the environment but you cannot give it up. The author, Joyce Walder really hits the nail on the head with this article, it was a really fun read. Oh, and the title of this post was my favorite quote from the article.

What not-so-green habits are you feeling guilty about? I can start. After being very serious about water conservation, thinking about every dish that would need washing and not even giving my poor cat her beloved fresh water from the sink faucet, I am addicted to taking a bath in a really big bathtub. It uses lord knows how many gallons. Even worse than that, while I’m in there, I read People magazine. It’s shameful. Please begin public flogging now.  And/Or join in and tell us your not-so-green shame.

2) Another link: Here is The Greenwatching Index, so you can try and keep track of what’s really green and what’s just using the term for marketing purposes.

3) Finally, I wanted to share an interview I did with architect Christian Dauer on another website. In this Mission District renovation, he reused as much of what would have otherwise been construction waste as possible, and it added to the beauty and spirit of the house. Even this gorgeous kitchen table was constructed from on-site reclaimed wood:

Our fearsome co-founder gets interviewed by Design Glut

Liz Kinnmark and Kegan Fisher are the creative duo behind Design Glut (we interviewed them a while back right here on Hatch). They create mind melting housewares, jewelry, and accessories that tell stories with unexpected twists. Check out their product offering right here on the Design Public — it’ll certainly make you crack a smile.

Design Glut

In addition to being INSANELY creative, Liz and Kegan find inspiration in interviewing true entrepreneurs who follow their dreams and who live life passionately and on their own terms.

Last week Design Public’s own Drew Sanocki had the honor of being interviewed.
