As someone who just recently had an energy audit done (for free! paid for by the energy company, through a 3rd party!) and got a lot of free junk (plastic for the windows, CFLs, water heater blanket, foam for behind outlets, foam to put around pipes, on and on), I'm looking forward to trying to save some $$ this winter on heating. Because my place is old and the furnace is ancient and Montana winters don't come cheap. The programmable thermostat that we just installed will be free after a rebate. We're well on our way.

But one word of caution - don't turn down the water heater TOO low. Apparently some genius was trying to save money at some point and turned ours down too low to kill bacteria in the tank. Ew.
