Online Magazines: Nesting Newbies

I am pretty new to digital magazines. While I love my glossies, so many of them have disappeared lately that I am turning to the internet. Online magazines are only getting better and better lately – they have such a professional look, they feature people that we won’t see in the big magazines like Elle Decor and House Beautiful, at least not yet, they have much shorter load times than they used to and they have become really easy to “flip through”. To me they are the media that exists between blogs and print magazines. I’m digging them, and who can resist that orange, black and white cover? I LOVE IT!  I had not heard of Nesting Newbies until I saw a link to it in an email I received from one of our soon-to-be-featured guest bloggers. They are now on issue 2 (yup, that sounds about right for how long it takes me to hear about something new and exciting), and I LOVE their philosophy. I think they said it best themselves, so I am going to quote:

NestingNewbies.com is a cross platform experience featuring a quarterly digital shelter magazine, online cooking segments, and informational blogs aimed at showing those who are new to nesting how to cook, entertain, and decorate.

NestingNewbies.com combines a traditional magazine format with the new social media trend of original online videos and blogs to present a cross-platform experience for “nesting newbies,” the site’s target audience of those who are new to nesting and have no clue when it comes to cooking, entertaining, and decorating. Cooking and decorating enthusiasts will also enjoy the original ideas being presented.

It sounds like just what  a lot of us need these days! To peruse the winter issue, click here.

Inspiration Monday: Eileen Gray Continued

O.K. I promised you a little more Eileen Gray last week, so here goes…

Chest of drawers, early 1920s

These remind me of those awesome new Claude modular dressers that Jonathan Adler just designed. I feel like he must have been inspired by Eileen when he sat down to sketch.

Bedroom from the Rue Bonaparte apartment. How sexy is this?

Transat chairs, circa 1925-1930

I love seeing original sketches like these! These are part of the collection at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

All images via Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture by Phillipe Garner and published by TASCHEN. I highly recommend adding it to your design library. It’s available used at Amazon for about $10!

Neighborhood Graffiti & Weather

I saw this little exchange when I was walking past Highland Hardware over the weekend, and I completely cracked up:

Meanwhile, up the street at Ace Hardware, this was going on:

By the time I read this, there really wasn’t much left to sled on, but seeing as how the AJC posted a picture of kids sledding down some grass that had frost on it the last time it “snowed” here in Atlanta, I’m sure people were still running out for sleds.

Are you snowed in? Did a few inches completely paralyze your city and did the local news preempt Oprah to dedicate an HOUR to talk about something they know nothing about, namely snow? My favorite quote was from an interview with a DOT guy who said “The thing is, we thought this here wuz gonna be a dry snow. We didn’t realize it’d be the kind of snow that makes the road wet!” Huh?

Bachelor Plaid Wallpaper on “Cougartown”

The first sitcom on network TV that I have actually chuckled over in a long time is ABC’s Cougartown. The set design is rather brilliant, and I love the context of Graham and Brown’s Marcel Wanders-designed Audrey wallpaper in the hunky neighbor’s bachelor pad. I thought I’d share it with you, though I don’t know a lot of bachelors who have purple curtains:

Dream Loft Real Estate (Atlanta)

I was dropping stuff off at the Salvation Army on the West Side of Midtown Atlanta last week (yup, my effort to avoid winding up on Hoarders continues – this was from attic crawl space number three) and I found myself completely taken by Allied Factory Lofts. As I stopped to take a picture, I noticed that one of the units was for sale. While I live in a cottage in town on a postage stamp lot, I sometimes dream of going more urban and moving into a loft. Not one of those brand new high rises that calls itself a loft building, but a true Flashdance-esque converted warehouse or factory. This place is a 2 bedroom/2 bath that has been super glammed up, and when I picked up the flyer, it was priced just under $300K:

I cannot even imagine how much this place would cost if it were in NYC! Anyway, if you are interested, the West Side is becoming very artsy and cool (salvage yards meet high end design shops, artist studios meet dive blues bars), and you can find out the details about it here.
