This week I was looking through the Fresh New Spaces Group on flickr and the rooms that really jumped out at me were the ones where I could really see the owners’ personalities and personal style. Here are a few of my favorites:

I just love this living room shot from lipstickonmyteeth. I also love that the caption reads “The picture I chose if I have to sum up my style with one image”:

Be sure to check out the lipstickonmyteeth blog here!

This kitchen area certainly reflects the personal style of kimhas6cats (of the fabulous blog desiretoinspire):

Bright colors and a mix of styles balance out in La Vie Toni’s scrumptious living room:

Be sure to check out her blog here. Be warned – some of the shots will make you really hungry. Right now I am craving a sandwich I just saw over there.

Green Tip & Product of the Week

So, what lazy green thing have I been up to this week? I signed up to follow AltUse on facebook. That way, when they tell me some wacky way to reuse something or a new way to use something simple and organic and it’s not crazy, it will stick in my head and I’ll waste less. It doesn’t really get much lazier than simply following something on Facebook, does it? I never claimed I was a go-getter.

Also, I really loved this article over at Styleture about Sustainable Interior Design. Check it out here.

Now, for the sustainable product of the week….drumroll please…

I LOVE the Vitra Cork Stools. I love that there are three shapes, though I kinda wish there were four, just to even things out. The top one reminds me of fungi, and the bottom two remind me of chess pieces. I think it would be really cute to have two pairs of them around a kids table, since they are only 13″ high. This is also good coffee table height, and end table height if they are next to a low modern sofa or daybed. I have to say, the pricetag forces me to think of these more like functional art in the form of sculpture, but when I pick my favorite products, I have no budget constraints holding me back.

So what makes these eco-friendly? Cork. Cork is a natural product harvested from trees in the Mediterranean basin of Spain and Portugal. While many people think cork is a new technology, it has actually been used for thousands of years. Unlike hardwood, the useful part of a cork tree is the bark, not the lumber of the tree itself. Cork is only retrieved from mature cork trees and is limited to being harvested in 9 year cycles so that the same tree can harvested for generations making it an environmentally friendly resource

I haven’t, but I’m dying to! What did you think?

I’m a huge fan of Bill Cunningham, and he has a charming video here about the fashions he’s seeing on The High Line.

Speaking of fashion, check out the High Line Merch here. I love the Trina Turk green and white print hat:

Keep up with High Line news over at The High Line Blog and the ever-growing Friends of The High Line flickr group pool. This shot is from flickr member ljpsf.

Sharing the Second Home After the Breakup…

In this economy, a lot of couples who have broken up are still stuck living together, and the movie The Break-Up certainly showed us how disasterous a situation that can be (I may have held out for that apartment too; it was gorgeous). However, it seems things can work out a little better when it comes to a second home.

Last week I was fascinated by this article about a couple who restored a lake house together and planned on getting married there, but broke up before the special day. They divvied up their weekends and decided to have the wedding party without the wedding. Although they plan to sell the house eventually, I thought it was really nice that they decided to share it. It also seemed to me that they must have started decorating the day after reading Jonathan Adler’s My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living – mid-century bottles, Rex Ray artwork, shag rugs, silhouettes, retro ceramic lamps, and even an Adler Liza pillow.

To see a short video about it, click here – the decor is really fun to look at, and the story is sweet and bittersweet. For the full article, click here.

Do you think you could handle sharing a second home with an ex in order to save your access to the real estate?

Flickr Faves on Fridays: Outdoor Spaces

I love that flickr member lyckeliv takes full advantage of the outdoors. From dodging mosquitoes, to a picnic on the beach to a lovely table in summery blues and greens, she has the greatest mastery of beautiful color combos. She also has her own blog here. Currently, it is in Swedish, but Lycke tells me she is considering adding English as well, so give her a nudge if you hope to become a regular reader. Knowing the language or not, her pictures are worth a thousand words anyway:

This lyckeliv shot makes me wish I were on the beach having this picnic:
