Do you have a favorite outdoor space? Please share it with us; I’d love to amass a whole bunch of photos and share them with everyone. Please post a link to your picture in the comments section. Also, we’d love to see it in our Fresh New Spaces group on flickr. For those of you who have iLife 09, uploading to flickr has never been easier, has it? I can’t believe I ever struggled with FTP whatever thingees in the past – now I’ll I do is hit a little flickr icon! It’s heavenly!

I’ll start: Here is one of my favorite outdoor spaces. I shot it at Sun in My Belly in Decatur Georgia. This is an EXCELLENT cafe/bisto restaurant that is decorated with Parisian flair:

Robert Indiana in Rockport Maine

Robert Indiana EAT sign Farnsworth Museum

One really cool thing that happened in Maine last week was the lighting of Robert Indiana’s EAT sign atop the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland Maine. Best known for its incredible Wyeth exhibits,  the Farnsworth does a great job of keeping up with the art world, and is finally honoring one of the area’s adopted sons. Indiana has been living on Vinalhaven Island for decades, just a quick ferry ride from Rockland Harbor.

The most extraordinary thing about this event was that it was the first time Indiana had ever seen his EAT sign lit. The sign was commissioned for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, and was taken down after a day because hungry and confused people kept looking for a restaurant nearby. Apparently, the sign has been stored in a former 8-seat outhouse behind Indiana’s home on Vinalhaven for decades. The EAT sign is not the only exclusive the Farnsworth has snagged; this exhibit is full of never before seen work. The Robert Indiana and the Star of Hope exhibit, where he has replaced his iconic “LOVE” with “HOPE” as part of the Obama campaign is full of unseen work. I highly recommend a stop in Rockland for anyone in the area. The exhibit is running now through October 25th.

Hey All! I’m out of town, and thus today’s Flickr Faves on Fridays are all cruddy quality pictures taken from my phone, because I don’t really have a fast enough connection to browse flickr today. These are all charming container gardens I’ve snapped after lunches this week, the first in Atlanta and the rest in Maine.

After lunch at Adkin’s Park the other day, I felt compelled to take a picture of the awesome Clawfoot Container garden in front of The Key Lime Pie Salon in my neighborhood:

I don’t know what it is about where I choose to eat lunch, but after lunch at Red’s Eats in Wiscasset Maine two days ago, I came upon glorious windowbox after glorious windowbox. These container gardens have a lot to do with why Wiscasset is “the prettiest little town in Maine”! The one below is at a beautiful home store called smitten (same talented owner as rock paper scissors shown above). I was so impressed with the owner’s taste and merchandising skills; I highly recommend a visit if you are on Coastal Route 1!

DIY Shelving

I know we are not out of the recession yet so I thought I’d share our DIY shelving project. If you have a drill to make some holes in a few wood boards, you can make this!

Here’s what you need, all of which can  be found at your local hardware store:

*  3 fir boards (good to let these dry out a bit so sap doesn’t get all over your things)
*  6 all thread rods
*  36 sets of nuts and washers to sandwich the boards
*  6 coupling hex nuts to use as feet
*  a drill

1.) Drill holes in all four corners as well as in the center edges of the boards. We stacked all three boards on top of one another so the holes would be placed in a similar spot on each board.

2.) Put a hex nut on each rod. Add a nut/washer above the hex nut. Insert the rods in the freshly cut holes of one of the boards. Sandwich the board with another set of nuts/washers.

3.) Add another set of nuts/washers to each rod placing the set at the midpoint of the rod. Top it off with a board and again sandwich the wood with the nuts/washers. Continue this process for the top board.

4.) Make sure you have some bad TV on in the background. Read the rest of this entry »
