Dream Real Estate: My Favorite House

Every time I walk from my house to Piedmont Park, I pass this house and drool. This photo does not even do it justice. It has this low country charming style, and it was built in 1916, the same year the viaduct to Piedmont Park was built and connected my neighborhood and others beyond it to downtown Atlanta. The house has a magnificent front porch, two bedrooms upstairs with fireplaces and French doors out to that top deck, a nice sized kitchen, beautiful hardwood floors, a gorgeous front staircase equipped with a curved wooden banister, a screened-in porch, a large sleeping porch on the back, and even a garage with a man-cave room upstairs covered in horizontal beadboard. For the complete tour and more information, click here. To contact the real estate agent, see comment #5 below for email and phone information.

Yesterday on the way back from the park we noticed this baby is for sale and we actually went in for the open house. I know people go to open houses for entertainment purposes, but I hate to waste a realtor’s time when I am not actually in the market for a house and I usually never do it. However, yesterday I had to break down and make an exception. I was hoping the house would have 50 years of newspapers inside and smell like cat pee, so I would not covet it so much. It was the opposite – the house was airy and light and so charming I wanted to move in right away, and I hate moving! It’s a block from Piedmont Park, Trader Joe’s and the artsy movie theater – does location get any better than that?

Where’s your dream house? Have you ever seen it come on the market and consider about some hellish move  just to inhabit it?

Hi Emily! I already really live in my other dream house, and my brother built it so I don’t think I’d ever want to leave it, but this is probably the only house on earth that would tempt me! I can’t stop thinking about it! I tried to get my parents to move down here and buy it, but they are not going for it, even though they are buried in snow in Massachusetts right now! The next best thing would be some cool hatch reader picking it up :)

Wow. Just wow. That house is GORGEOUS, a dream home! I would *love* to live there. You can’t even buy a studio apartment in an alright neighborhood for under 600K here in SF. So jealous.

    I want that house!

(but I’d rip that kitchen out, PRONTO!)

Hey Sally! It’s funny, up close, the tiles in the kitchen (backsplash) were so out they were in. They actually had sort of a cool retro Heath Ceramics look to them and seemed like high quality from the 70s or something. I totally dug them. I’d probably recycle the cabinets and replace the appliances and counters (I’m thinking soapstone), but for this ‘hood it’s a really large light kitchen. I think a lot of people go through a house and if they don’t see that ubiquitous brown speckled granite they don’t want to buy it – thus it’s easier to get a good deal on a house with a kitchen that doesn’t look like it’s straight off an HGTV cheesy makeover show!

The park down the street is the best park in the City of Atlanta, and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The Beltline (a new light rail that will hook into MARTA) will also have a station nearby…SOMEDAY! Right now our city has the infrastructure of a third world country.

I’m glad you took a look inside. I’ve always wondered about this one. All the houses on Orme Circle and Park are way more interesting than they look from the street and some are very cool from the street. I wouldn’t want to live on Park though. All kind of things happen on Park and now the festivals are coming back to Piedmont.

Seems to me that most open house sitters are bored to death and enjoy the company. I recently toured “Ansley Parkside” and “The Residences at Lullwater Park” townhouses on weekdays. I think I woke up Jef and John.

    Hi Terry!

I live on Los Angeles and I’ve lived on Virginia Circle, and all kinds of things happen there too. Two weeks ago, someone stole three lug nuts off my car in an attempt to steal my tire, and I wound up driving around on two lug nuts for god knows how long! On Va Circle, I had a homeless camp right between my backyard and the Baptist Church. I’d go out in the a.m. and see feet sticking out of my shrubs, and cross my fingers that the dude was alive before calling the police.

The parking situation at this house might get on my nerves in terms of guests having a place to park and the shared driveway situation, but unless the neighbor one shares the driveway with is a total jerk, I’d deal with it for this house! There is also a heinous second floor add on on the house right next door. It seems we are all dealing with that kind of situation lately. I have a new McMansion next door to me that seems like it will NEVER be finished.

I need to get over my fear of open houses. I know realtors know there are mostly just nosy neighbors in attendance, and the sell-thru rate from an open house is something like 7-9%!

I would love to see a feature on the book COMPACT HOUSES. It is such a timely idea and a must for every designer to read. I want one! Anyone interested in what I think could be sustainable, affordable housing such look into this book.
