Has anyone been to the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson? I have not, but the upcoming Raoul Dufy exhibition (Febuary 7-July 5) makes me want to plan a trip:
The exhibit has been travelling the world, and it was in Japan before it landed in North America. As I was checking out the museum online, I saw that a Eudora Welty exhibit is scheduled to start on April 11. As a fan of her writing, I read further to figure out what they were going to be showing. The show will feature
photographs of Mississippi that constitue a near complete re-creation of her first solo exhibition held in 1936 at the Photographic Galleries of Lugene Opticians in New York City…In these photographs, Welty captures America in the depths of the Great Depression revealing a compassion towards her subject that also became a hallmark of her writing.
Sounds cool – I had no idea she was a talented photographer as well.
So what exhibits are you looking forward to in the near future? Have you ever been to Jackson Mississippi or the Mississippi Museum of Art? Do you have any hot tips on what else to check out while I’m in town? Please let me know in the comments if you do. I’m off to mapquest my route!

I have not seen it and I didn’t know about this artist, but you learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing.

As a native Mississippian, Eudora was always like the “lady down the street” even though she lived 75 miles away. I discovered her photos several years ago and saw through her camera lens the images that formed her words.
If you have never been to Mississippi, give it a try. You just might be surprised at the extremely diverse people – artists, song writers, authors, storytellers and just the general populace – that make up the most hospitable and friendly state in this country.
P.S. And don’t believe all of the racial crap. I have worked in many states throughout this country and have found more racists in other states than I have ever witnessed in Mississippi.

Thanks so much BMusselwhite! I’m with you on the racial crap – I found much more racism and segregation in Boston and Cincinnati than I do here in Atlanta!

Hey Becky, I’m from Mississippi right outside of Jackson and I think you’ll find some great things to do in and around the area depending on what you’re into. For a Welty fan, you can tour Ms. Welty’s home and you really should visit Lemuria Books, quite possibly the BEST independent bookstore around.
Haven’t lived in MS for about 5 years now, but the people and the place always pull you back.

Thank you Merry! I LOVE independent bookstores, and they are a dying breed, which makes me very sad. Charlottesville Virginia has some great ones, and one of my other favorites is ABCDE in Camden Maine. I have yet to find a favorite here in Atlanta.

Ondine, so far I’ll I could find is that it will be in Palm Beach first. The organizers of the exhibit are here:

Perhaps you could call them to find out more information.
The Humanities Exchange: Tel 514-935-1228 (I believe this is a Canadian number; they are based in Montreal).
