Hi Herman! I find I can artfully arrange books better when they are stacked on their backs and mixed in with other objects. Some I do by colors (not necessarily all the same color, but compositions that look good together), others I do by subject. It usually works out well. Also, I've noticed that people who have National Geographic collections have them nicely arranged in blocks on their shelves to add unity. I think I did a book arrangement post awhile back, and you've inspired me to do another.

Great comments about a zine I would never even look at. Loved the book shelves but what is 'that backwards book thing'? I just had 12 feet of floor to ceiling bookshelves built in and haven't yet put my books away. I have eschewed the uniform paper cover look as too precious but I've not heard of other options.
