Lasting Vintage Trends - The Mod Look
I was reading my Domino, and for the third time, I noticed how familiar two of the images in this mod inspiration board looked. I whipped open the 1964 House and Garden issue I have had sitting by the scanner for months, and sure enough, I had these two images marked for scanning and sharing as Vintage Inspiration: The Cover (hey, it’s got that log stack thing going on):

The pictures that looked so familiar:
I usually let those posts sit and sit, because I don’t feel anyone will “beat me” to the images. However, someone over at Domino obviously shares my passion for vintage home design magazines! Here are some more great images from the issue I’ve been meaning to share with you for awhile. A “blur the lines between inside and out” Miami pad:
A feature on modern houses. This one was in New Canaan, designed by architect Hugh Smallen, who lived here with his family. I wonder if the house still exists. Perhaps my pal Tom knows:
I was also loving this feature on needlepoint rugs. The paisley one screams Pucci to me, while the one you can barely see on the right looks like the grandfather of a present-day Jonathan Adler design:
This storage hiding solution reminded me of the feature in the same issue of Domino about Rashida Jones’ studio apartment:
Finally, I chuckled as this feature reminded me of my favorite line of The Graduate:
Domino photos from the February 2008 issue, and Paul Costello respectively.

Hi Becky,
It’s your friend Tom. Smallen designed more than one house in New Canaan. We’ve been in one, during a real estate open house.
I just googled Smallen and New Canaan and came up with this blog http://plossville.com/pvblog/?cat=15 which I hadn’t known of before.
There was no permalink but if you scroll down to October 9 there are a lot of pictures of New Canaan moderns, including three by Smallen. The one I was in was the Becker House; it’s on the same road as Smallen’s Parson’s house. The other one is the Smallen House, which is shown in your picture. The blogger (Skip Ploss, I think — I’ve never heard of him but Gina is from around here and might know him) took them in October so they’re all still extant.

I was wrong about there being no permalink to that post with all the New Canaan pictures. Here it is: http://plossville.com/pvblog/?p=67

Thanks Tom! I’ll probably do a follow up post with more pictures of this house. I’m glad to know they are still standing, though in New Canaan I fear it won’t be for long.

Something has happened with most of the images - nothing can be seen!

Hi Trendoffice, this has been happening for a few days, I’m not sure what the problem is! Please check back in later, hopefully we’ll get it fixed!

Hey, in the process of Googling myself (you can never be too careful) I came upon this thread.
The image issue has been resolved by some server and software upgrades. Sorry for the inconvenience.
The Smallen houses are indeed still there. Parson’s was for sale the last time I went by.
I am in the process of trying to find out more about Gelbin’s McCarthy House, which I have been informed by the current owner is actually called the Murphy House. I might have some more pictures later on.
Thanks for reading.

Oh, and Gina who?

Thank you Skip!
Gina is Tom Anderson’s (the commenter above who included your link)wife. They have a great blog called Modernhousenotes, which you can check out here:
http://www.modernhousenotes.blogspot.com/
Or if that doesn’t work, click on the link up above by his name, I know that one works.
Thanks for stopping by - I’m glad you googled yourself!
