I like to pick up a different design book every few days to get inspiration. This week I’ve been re-reading David Hicks: Designer by Ashley Hicks. I thought I’d share a few favorite images from this book:

When I saw the bathroom pictured above, I immediately thought of this Jonathan Adler bathroom:

One can see the influence of David Hicks precedents in these other Adler designs, in my opinion:

I AM VERY PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT THERDAVID HICKS STILL INSPIRED.

DURING THE END OF EIGHTIES, I WAS ENGAGED BY Mr. HICKS ON KENSINGTON PALACE GARDENS PROJECT. HE WAS MY “MENTOR” OVER 3 YEARS… WICH HELPED ME TO EXPRESS MY CREATIVITY, COMMUNICATION SKILS AS WELL AS AN PRAGMATICAL POINT OF WIEV ON “TIMELESS DESIGN”.

TODAY, WITH AN AMUSEMENT AND A POINT OF NOSTALGY, I AM PASSING OVER MY DOCUMENTS… PLANS… SCETCHES WICH I STILL HAVE IN MY POSSESION.
FURNITURE LAYOUTS… DESIGN DETAILS… CONTACT REPORTS… OF ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND PRESTIGIOUS PROJECT IN LONDON… BASED AT THE “BILLIONARE ROW” OVER LOOKING KENSINGTON PALACE AND GARDENS.

    AS LAO-TSE SAID:

“THE VISIBLE MAKES THE SHAPE OF THE WORK…
THE NON VISIBLE MAKES ITS VALUE.”

BUT… SOME OF US CAN FEEL THE DIFERENCE.

Hmmmm, I’ve been thinking that Adler (who is completely unknown in the UK) has been very ‘influenced’ by British design.

I was searching for rugs earlier on this year, and was struck by the similarity between some of his rugs and those of the Rug Company
http://www.therugcompany.info/default.aspx (look for example at ‘Designer Collection’ and check out Paul Smith’s stripes, Vivienne Westwood’s Union Jack and Diane Von Fursternburg’s zebra prints). I think I feel a blog post coming on…

That girl’s room is sooo pretty. I think it is the most cheerful and inspiring little kid’s room I have seen long time. The combination of great colors and patterns with “serious” adult furniture is right on.

Quote from David Hicks – ‘Good taste has nothing to do with money.’
Read the books (don’t just look at the pictures) that are still occasionally available on E Bay and you will see that DH was years & years ahead of his time.

Hello, we are students from Pennington Middle School and we are doing a project for National history day about David Hicks the interior designer. The whole purpose of our project is to find out about what he did and the legacies he left behind. Is there any way to get in contact with his son, Ashley Hicks, to find out more about him? We would really be interested and appreciative to anyone who could provide us with contact information.

To Pennington Middle School students: you can contact Ashley Hicks through me, email sales@davidhicks.co.uk. The best way to find out about David Hicks’ work is from his book LIVING WITH DESIGN pub 1979 or from Ashley’s book DAVID HICKS DESIGNER which is available on Amazon. Good luck with the project!
