Oh dear Lord, it’s Baaaa–aaacckkkk! As much as I ripped on it last season, I am totally psyched to watch Season 2 of Design Star on HGTV. I mean, it’s not like The Wire* is back on HBO or Project Runway is back on Bravo yet or anything else that’s good. This year the show will take place in Vegas – as if the designs needed to get any tackier. Let’s hope they made the candidate admission process a lot more selective this year. I’m hoping everyone will head over to decor8 to discuss again this year, I always had so much fun dishing with everyone over there last season.*
Has anyone watched the painful follow up to Design Star, the program called Color Splash! starring last year’s winner, shirtless David? He’s really difficult to watch as a host, staring into the camera with unnaturally blinking, unnaturally bugged-out eyes, full of really awful phony enthusiasm, managing to make the word “sizzle” make my skin crawl. Perhaps if they had used him as the idea guy/carpenter and runner-up Alice as the hostess, they might have had a decent show there. Live and learn HGTV. Will David finally experience having his show cancelled?
Anyway, the pros of Design Star – the judges rule, the host is just fine, the drama is hilarious, and it’s so bad it’s good, kind of like the movie Glitter. I know I’ll be watching, though I may have to skip The Making of a Design Star, which I assume will be all about how they taught David to bug out his eyes and annunciate the word “SIZZLE!”.
One more note, I CANNOT WAIT to see what this contestant is about. I’m pretty sure that Fabio is is stylist, and that they share the same chest-waxer:

*Holly’s been away on vacation so I haven’t had a chance to check with her yet, but I know that’s where I’ll be heading.
**The Wire is the best TV show ever. Why am I only one of about 5 people out there who watch it?

Hello darling! Yes, let’s dish about it on decor8. Sounds like fun. I have the first two episodes (from HGTV) so I plan to watch them this weekend.
Doesn’t it premiere on Sunday night?? And doesn’t that blonde guy look like one half of the Nelson twins? Oh and a young Fabio of course!! Oh Hanson!!!

I have no idea what most of these references are about, but this sounds great. I NEED a good/awful reality show to sink my teeth into.

Hey Paola! I think HOlly is catching up after vacation, plus she had the preview tape so she may have forgotten that last night was premiere night. I TOTALLY enjoyed the show and I thought David did really well as a judge. In fact, I like David except for everything having to do with “Color Splash.” I just don’t think hosting was his gig. He’s a good designer and will probably make a good judge.
PEOPLE IMPRESSIONS: I wound up kinda liking the Fabio “the empire state building with a fur on it”guy. I doubt I am going to like his designs, but I liked that he knew his style and that he was from Tennessee and not L.A.
Oh Serena, she is the perfect example of a person who inappropriately brings a yappy dog everywhere.
oh my god, Lisa (bright clothing, black mohawk in a sea of blonde hair) is PR’s Jay’s long lost sister! She’s even from PA!
Michael freaked me out.
Yoga for Cats, what? She seemed really funny – it seemed like she was set up to fail and I felt bad for her. She did have the funniest line of the night “My dad’s a Buddhist, my mom’s Roman Catholic, so I tell people I’m Jewish.”
I like Scott’s personality (the Santa Barbara guy). He could dissolve into major drama queen but I thought he had good vibes.
I think the show realized their huge mistake of not considering hosting abilities enough last year – it’s not just about design talent when you are hosting a show.
Surfer dude JOsh – a new shirtless wonder?
Neerasha from Palm Springs – love her Debi Mazar style and how she admitted she’s high maintenance.
VENUE: Vegas – what a choice – home of the Hugh Hefner suite, the Liberace Museum, fake Venice and Fake Paris. I hope they come up with some more interesting challenges this year.

okay, sweetie, don’t lie… you know you love to hate it as much as I do. I actually enjoyed design star – even though the designs were often lackluster. one thing I don’t care for, however, it the resulting blah nature of David’s show. Bless his heart, he just doesn’t have the on-air personality to carry it off. And I think they failed him with the name Color Splash. How retro 80′s can you get?

Glad you posted this, I didn’t like last season so much, but something tells me that season two is going to be awesome. They chose some great people last night!

Oh Franki, I LOVE LOVE LOVE hating it. Although, it looks somewhat promising, I might even not hate it and hate liking it this season. I LOVED the drama and the bad designs last year – I was glued to the TV every week!
I agree, “Color Splash” was such a lame theme to make him try to make SIZZLE every week!
