Who caught the Live Earth concert on Saturday? I think it was fate that I tuned in just as Duran Duran started up “Planet Earth” from London.* It’s unfortunate that the title “Ordinary World” fit the theme, as that song sucks and we could have heard something awesome like “Hungry Like the Wolf,” instead, but whatever. I guess my musical desires weren’t what the day was about…
The coverage on Bravo was full of good green tips. Duff and that guy Dave that lost the VJ contest to Jessie Camp and who was on Reno 911! were there! And Snoop – well, we know he’s a fan of hemp products. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed a tour of a Green house, where the owner demonstrated how to cover dining room chairs with old sweaters, showed off Icestone counters (REALLY beautiful), recycled glass tiles, bowls made from recycled windshields, wine glasses made from recycled wine bottles, a hemp sofa, and his Energy Star-rated fridge.
The only question I have is, when you replace your old fridge with an Energy Star approved fridge, what is the responsible thing to do with the old fridge? Does anyone know? Please share with us! Oh, and it seemed that thoroughly washing a potato chip bag with soap and water to reuse it as wrapping paper wasn’t really worth wasting the amount of water it takes to get all that grease out, but it was a creative idea. I also enjoyed the interview with Josh Dorfman, author of The Lazy Environmentalist: Your Guide to Easy, Stylish Green Living. It sounds like a good primer for those just starting to learn how to go green.
So more on Icestone – it is made from recycled glass and recycled concrete. It has a terrazzo type of look to it:
All in all, I enjoyed the concerts, especially tuning into XM and hearing Spinal Tap sounding exactly like they did in the movie – they really took it up to eleven.
*FOR DURAN DURAN FANS ONLY: My best friend Liz happened to be in town for a layover. The same Liz I who came over to watch “Blue Silver” in 5th grade in her nightgown (it was a schoolnight, and we needed special permission to stay up. A compromise was reached with our parents that we could stay up if we were completely ready to go straight to bed afterwards). I had a flashback to Live Aid in 1984, the last time the fab five played together until a recent “we need money” tour. Liz and I were holding up old albums (Arena and The Power Station) to the TV, trying to figure out if the guitar player was Andy. If it was, he has gotten a lot better looking with age, unlike 3 of the rest of them. Yup, we’re hard core Durannie dorks for over 20 years now. I’m pretty sure John Taylor and I were supposed to be married by now. I’m not sure what happened.

Just thinking about all the plastic waste created by these concerts…paper cups, beer cups, aluminum containers of soda drinks and beers, glass bottles…paper waste…will they recycle all that?

Actually, I believe a big part of it was trying to make the concert itself eco-friendly, but that seems like an overwhelming task. I know the talent was offsetting their travel buying carbon credits. A lot of artists like Barenaked Ladies and K.T. Tunstell are doing their best to make their tours eco-friendly.

BTW…..the guy you ‘thought’ was Andy was like some 30 year old guy (the rest are in their mid-forties) I thought any fan would know that, especially a ‘hrad-core’ fan

I thought he must have had a lot of work done if that was him! I knew he quit the first tour a few years ago very early on. We were cracking up, holding albums up to the TV screen
Neither of us ever wanted to marry Andy, so we never cared about him. thanks for the info!
