The May 1965 issue of H&G is another treasure trove of great design. The main theme was “How to Shape Your Space to Fit Your Needs,” and so much of it is applicable today:

This A-Frame, nestled in the hills of Mill Valley, CA, was designed by Robert Marquis and Claude Stoller. The plans included additions for the family should their needs change. The idea was to avoid awkward additions later – the plans had Phase I – the original house and Phase II – an expanded house designed by the original architects from the start. This is a great job idea when planning for a growing family, or for when you are hoping for a big raise down the road. When building a home, if you plan to expand one day, have the original architect draft the bigger version for you from the start.

I love the groovy furniture and bright colors on this deck – it really highlights the strong influence of Danish modern on California during the ’60′s. It also reminds me of modern-day Jonathan Adler Happy Hippy Chic:

This example was part of an article called “Five Ways to Solve THE LONG ROOM PROBLEM” This is a present-day conundrum many loft-dwellers. Aren’t these screens divine? I love that they used a brick-pattern in wood, the way they structure the room, and their transparency:

Finally, it’s amazing the way Dansk designs have held up over the years. I can vouch for that red pot – they are virtually indestructable and I love their lines. You can pick the pots, as well as the ice buckets on eBay for a song if you hurry!

Given the way that real estate has appreciated in Marin, I need a time machine to go back and buy that house…

I love old magazines like this. Old “Sunset” how-to books. So inspiring.
