One more event to tell you about that I heard about from Flavorpill. For those of you in S.F. who like weird stuff, the How Weird Street Fair takes place on Sunday May 6 from 11:11 a.m. to 5:55 p.m.
The “faire” will be going green this year, I mean really, let me digress one second, “going green” has become so popular that I fear it will turn into some trend that’s going to go away or become out of vogue. Or literally out of Elle – the last issue was “the green issue.” What happens when the same people who worshipped and then quickly dumped the pashmina in ’98 or the bowling bag in 2000 decide that green is out next season? Remember when Blaine Trump went grunge for about 30 seconds in the early ’90s? What if Leonardo DiCaprio decides he wants to drive a Hummer instead of a Prius?* The trend setters usually dump something as soon as it becomes available to the masses. Let’s not trivialize sustainable design into some fashion magazine flavor-of-the-minute and stick with it. Hey Elle, have you ever considered using more eco-friendly paper or ink for your magazine? Are your stylists still styling fur? Are the offices equipped with composting toilets (can you imagine?) Yeah, I thought so. There, I said it.
ANYWAY, here is how the festival is going to be ecologically responsible:
One of this year’s themes is Sustainable Technology. All seven dance stages will be run on bio-diesel this year. Recycling, composting, and educational materials will be provided by Green Mary, who is helping to make this year’s faire almost zero waste! There will be bike powered educational exhibits and a bike powered stage provided by Humboldt State’s Center for Appropriate Technology. And there will be exhibits and carnival games on sustainability. The faire will be documenting the process of going green, so that they can teach other events what to do.

*That snipe about Leo is not fair – he has been very devoted to the environment and spreading the word for quite some time now, and I cannot imagine him driving a Hummer. In fact, I call those ugly flourescent eco-friendly I-feel-too-guilty-not-to-use-them light bulbs that make my living room light up with all flattery of an airplane lavatory my Leonardo DiCaprio light bulbs.

I doubt you will ever see Leo driving a Hummer – or dumping his concern for the environment, Be a cynic if you want but he has been and is involved in it, including his mother and father. Its not a passing fad with him.

Oh LIsa, I agree with you, that’s why I included the asterisk and the comments about Leo in particular at the end of the post (not sure if you read down that far). My point was just that I fear that some people may just consider going green a passing fad when it needs to become integrated as a way of life. When something becomes a subject in fashion magazines, you never know how quickly it will pass, and we all need to make going green a way of life. I am still appalled by how many of my friends don’t even recycle their cans and bottles and newspapers.
