I was trolling through flickr the other day and was completely taken in by paola from mirrormirror’s* photographs of the new Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle. There is a fun pool of flickr members pictures of the park here. Anyway, it made me think about sculpture parks. What a wonderful way to blend public park space and art. One of my favorite parks is in Seattle as well – Richard Haag’s Gas Work Park, which used existing structures as sculpture to pay tribute to the history of the site.
In sculpture park-related news, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City is in the process of gaining an ethereal new backdrop designed by Steven Holl. I can’t think of a better architect for this project. While Gehry continues to get more commissions for his sculptural building designs, Holl’s understanding of white, materials, campus design, gallery space, light, and creating conversation with existing structures looks like it will be a perfect fit.
Here’s a list of a few more sculpture parks and gardens around the world. There is a fantastic international list over at artnut.com.
Serra Sculpture Park (St. Louis)
Herring Island Environmental Park (includes works by Andy Goldsworthy) (Victoria)
Vigeland Sculpture Park (Oslo)
Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Henry Moore works)
Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo Texas)
Marfa and the Chinati Foundation (Marfa, Texas)
National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.)
MoMA Sculpture Garden (NYC)
