Recently I participated in a discussion in some blog about how NYC/L.A./S.F.-centric most design magazines are and I realized I am guilty of the same thing – focusing only on those cities plus an occasional Chicago or Boston feature. I will be making an effort to feature more from the middle of the country, and I am going to start with Minneapolis, because not only is it is the home of Target, but more importantly because a lot of exciting design is happening there.
For one, there is the new Cesar Pelli Central Library (those of you in L.A. know Pelli best for that big blue Pacific Design Center, now it’s Minnesota’s turn to get a piece of from him). Tours are available, check the Central Library website for more information.
Also notable in Minneapolis are Jean Nouvel’s new Guthrie Theater (featured in the September issue of Wallpaper* magazine), Michael Graves’ addition to the Minneapolis Insitute of the Arts (photographed on the left). and the new addition to the Walker Arts Center by Herzog and de Meuron. Currently at the Walker, you can catch Ordinary Culture , which looks fascinating, and starting December 11, be sure and check out Some Assembly Required: Contemporary Prefabricated Houses.

This is a great post, I’m so happy you’re looking at other areas. I love Savannah and Alexandria VA/DC, even Portland ME – not in all your typical shelter mags, but amazing places for a combination of amazing architecture, charm and great design, of course.
Can’t wait for your next write-up!
