So sorry to be MIA this week. Some of it I blame on moving, most of it I blame on my internet provider, which has THE WORST customer service in the world (besides, perhaps, a certain customer service-outsourced satellite radio provider that shall remain nameless but begins with "X"). The other reason was that I was in San Antonio this weekend during Fiesta. San Antonio has a unique flavor and some really interesting architecture. Besides The Alamo, I classify a lot of it as "Tex Mex Art Deco." I am pretty sure I just made that up.
Anyway, I saw a great architecture office along the Riverwalk. It curved and smack dab in the middle of all the action on the river. I liked it so much that I took a picture. Then I started reading more about the Riverwalk and realized it was the office of the original Riverwalk architect, Robert H.H. Hugman. The Riverwalk is one of the great civic designs in our country – it took a flood control project turned it into a spectacular attraction and hub of urban activity. It’s interesting – with so many waterfront revitalization projects going on in almost every U.S. city, where the cities edges were extended to the waterfront, San Antonio literally brought the river into the middle of the existing city fabric, and drew the people down a story to enjoy it.
I was also lucky enough to visit The McNay Art Museum. It was a gorgeous buiding, setting, and had a very impressive collection – I highly recommend it as an important stop in your San Antonio tour. It also makes a spectacular wedding venue – one of the best I’ve seen, and believe me, I’ve been to a lot of them!
I lack photographing skillz, but I uploaded my recent shots to flickr anyway, in case anyone is interested.
By the way, ladies, beware of the grates on the sidewalks in San Antonio. A close friend of mine who shall remain nameless inadvertently did a Marilyn Monroe and accidently mooned a family of four who were walking behind us. I still crack up every time I think about it!
