dumbarton oaksWhile we’re talking about gardens, I thought I would suggest a few great places to look for  plants you like and outdoor spaces that will inspire you.  Please add your own favorites in the comments section; I’d love to get a long list of all of our favorites all over the country.

vegetable gardenMy favorite is Monticello , Thomas Jefferson’s little mountain estate.  I highly recommend taking the walk either up or down, or both ways.  When I’m feeling lazy, I bus it up and walk down.  There is often a wait to get into the house, but there is so much to see around the grounds that the time flies.

pav gardensWhile in Charlottesville, be sure to check out The Pavilion Gardens behind both sides of the University of Virginia lawn.  They are kept up beautifully and each one has a unique design.

If you are flying out of D.C. and you have some time in Georgetown, pay a visit to Dumbarton Oaks .  Although the museum and shop are closed for renovations until 2007, you won’t miss them when you are on the grounds.
