I first heard about Bad Design Darts in coolhunting a while back and forgot to pass it along. Luckily, there are some more chances to check it out this week and next at the Municipal Art Society in NYC. Members of the community were given bad design darts to highlight designs they found problematic, or just plain did not like. What a fantastic way to grab community interest and encourage participation in urban design!
Bad Design Darts are a part of the interactive community programs dreamt up by the Hester Street Collaborative , "a non-profit community based design/build organization that works with students and community members on participatory architectural projects to improve their public spaces, housing and schools." Some of their interns have created a blog to share their mission and their projects with the rest of us out here in cyberspace. It’s definitely worth checking out – I hope their ideas spread across the rest of the country.
