Love this! Rebar is a group of people who collaborate to shake up conventional ideas about design and culture. They also like to play on words using words that start with "re." I can’t remember who forwarded me their latest project, Park(ing), but it’s brilliant. As Rebar notes "more than 70% of San Francisco’s downtown outdoor space is dedicated to the private vehicle, while only a fraction of that space is allocated to the public realm." That is sad. I wonder what the stats are in other cities? I assume they are similar.
Anyway, the Rebar crew decided to lease some of that space with pocket change for 2 hours and construct a temporary pocket park.
Leave it to McSweeney’s to be there documenting the entire thing with video. I mean, if Dave Eggers had actually gotten the token boring white single straight guy spot on "The Real World San Francisco" instead of coming in second to that cartoonist guy, he might never have founded McSweeney’s and the world would be a much less fun place.
You know, I’m thinking, this would not go over quite so well in other cities. Like in some places on the East Coast, when some idiot is standing in a spot trying to save it for their circling friend, and they just get backed over, or at the very least, obscene finger gestures are exchanged. I feel it necessary to put in a disclaimer: Don’t try this at home, if your home is in Boston or New York City.

[...] So sorry, I just got this info from our pal Julie and I can’t believe I missed the news of it myself! Remember when I told you about REBAR leasing (with spare change in the meters) parking spots for extra open space? The project has blown up! Today is Park(ing) Day! Anyone can join PARK(ing) Day by transforming a parking spot into a PARK(ing) space on Thursday, September 21st, 2006. I realize I am getting this information to you at a late date, but there is time to participate by being a documentarian. REBAR will be producing a documentary of the happenings on PARK(ing) Day. To be included in the video documentary, please submit documentation of your PARK(ing) space. [...]
