Baby Blogapalooza 2005, General
Cooper and Emily are two moms with six kids between them. They live in different states (Pennsylvania and New York) and have known each other forever, so, naturally, they started a blog, Been There.
When Drew asked us to contribute to the ‘Baby Blogapalooza’ and talk about design and kids, it struck us both that when it comes to all things décor, kids have immediate and definite preferences, which appear to be formed early on. When you are a kid, who you are – your identity – is defined, in good part, by your favorite color, right?
And, if you want to wear pants under a dress every, single day, or Spiderman boxer shorts, a red cape and dark green socks, well, then, why not? Your design sense is all about what is comfortable and what makes you feel good.
Cooper’s mother, who has been an interior designer for 35 years, says she never met a little kid who did not know exactly what they liked by way of color or decorating. With that said, for those of us old enough to want to read a design blog, really knowing what we like in design and decorating doesn’t always come as easily.
So, in the interest of getting to the heart of the matter with “Children and Design,” we interviewed our in-house experts, who happen to be quite short, but didn’t hesitate for a second when queried on what they like and don’t.
Cooper’s eight-year-old daughter:
Since I was born, my favorite colors have been pink and blue. My walls are pink and my floor is blue and I like that my room is different than everyone else’s. The favorite thing for me in our house is the board with all our art on it. I like coming home from school and looking at it and I like that there are things on there from when I was younger so I can see what I used to draw.
Emily’s five-year-old daughter:
There are six things that make me happy when I look at them. 1. My diamonds that sparkle [actually Lucite marbles given to her by her aunt and uncle] 2. Pretty, shiny eggs [from her Easter basket] 3. My Medal [received when she was the birthday girl at the gymnastics party] 4. Nature 5. The moving dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History 6. Flowers.
There’s one piece of furniture that I think should be invented. A rocking chair. A rocking chair in the shape of a big white teddy bear with arms that could wrap around me when I read with my Mommy or Daddy.

Cooper’s five- year-old daughter:
My favorite color is blue, it used to be green, but now I like blue because I really like Shark Boy, and he is blue. My room is green and blue, because I used to like green, too. My favorite furniture in the house is the pictures of my family and my fish nightlight.
Emily’s three-year-old daughter:
My favorite color is blue. My favorite furniture in the whole house is my crib because I can climb out of it.
Cooper’s three-year-old son:
I like green and red and my “best brother” trophy from my sisters.
Cooper’s one-year-old son:
Since he can’t talk, his three older siblings have decided his favorite color is yellow. It is well understood, however, that his most beloved piece of furniture is a ball.
