Baby Blogapalooza 2005
Ben MacNeill’s site is about human babies. Specifically one named Trixie MacNeill. His pages contain tons of data regarding the sleep patterns, feeding schedules and diaper habits of a newborn baby. He and his wife Jenn currently live Chapel Hill, NC, and he’s currently developing software (Trixie Tracker) that will let parents set up Trixie Telemetry for own kids.
Do babies and design go well together? Absolutely, it’s like gasoline and kerosene. And some lighter fluid. And a match. That doesn’t mean that it’s not worth trying to maintain your design sensibilities in the face of parenthood. It just means that there’s probably going to be an explosion. Trixie taught us this lesson very early on when sprawling baby gear became the predominant design element in our household.
I reclaimed a sense of design and order by trying to figure out if there were any hidden patterns in Trixie’s daily chaos. Her blog details a year’s worth of sleep, bottle and diaper telemetry. This didn’t solve the problem of the overflowing baby gear, but it did give me a design outlet, and that’s the important thing. As long as I have a nice “Sleep Distribution of a 6-month old Human Baby” chart to look at, I don’t care if there’s a fine powder of pulverized Cheerio dust covering everything.
Now if I can just get Trixie’s mom to see it the same way.
