“Thus the Vespa came to be linked in my eyes with transgression, sin, and even temptation – not the temptation to possess the object, but the subtle seduction of faraway places where the Vespa was the only means of transport. And it entered into my imagination not as an object of desire, but as a symbol of an unfulfilled desire.”
-Umberto Eco

Vespa LogoThis past weekend over one hundred Vespa scooters descended on San Francisco for Scooter Rage 19 — the biggest Vespa rally this year west of the Mississippi. I attended with my old 1961 VBB 150 scoot and a D70 camera.

The Vespa scooter is right up there with Eames and Mies Barcelona chairs as a 20th Century design icon. But does it represent ‘fresh new design’? Dare we feature it on this site?

Yes. I raise my pint of Newcastle Ale and drink to that, and not just because I’ve lusted after them since junior high. Vespa scooters serve as a stylish palette for individual self-expression. Their owners constantly reinvent them, creating something fresh and new out of a fifty-year-old design.

Last night, after five rides totaling about ten hours, I put together our most recent design slideshow. Enjoy!
